  • off duty, but still a cop

/04/07 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - Customers at a northwest Harris County McDonald's witnessed a robbery right inside the restaurant. Unfortunately for the gunman, an off-duty HPD SWAT officer was nearby and got involved.

The robbery happened at a McDonald's fast food restaurant on Jones and Grant in northwest Harris County. The off-duty officer was eating just across the parking lot at Del Pueblos restaurant.

As the officer was leaving the restaurant, he saw people coming out of the McDonald's across the parking lot, yelling that they had been robbed.

The officer took off in his vehicle after the suspect, who police say threatened the officer with a gun once he caught up with him. The officer opened fire.

The suspect ran into some woods nearby and eventually went to some nearby apartments where he lives.

"There (the suspect) called in the incident as a shooting in order to get medical attention for himself," said Captain M.W. Martin with the Houston Police Department. "Harris County deputies responded to that scene and were able to determine that it was the suspect from the McDonald's robbery and shooting.

One person was pistol whipped during the robbery at McDonald's, but is expected to be OK.

Police say they sent K-9 units into the woods and recovered a pistol.

Just goes to show you that they are never "off duty". Good on him!

The good guys win again! The ACLU, and other such groups will try to find fault.
