Statistically, a very convincing argument can be made in favor of a yes answer to the first question. Carl Sagan, when he was on TV, used to get real passionate about it. He convinced me.

As for the second. I think it unlikely.

Well if we look upon what we have done in the past when someone has told us that it is impossible I doubt that the distant thing would be a problem. If the oil companies were not buying off senators to keep techonlogy supressed then heck we might have a livable space staion in orbit where ordinary men and women visit and live routinely. I would venture that we would have a moon base where people would go for vacations and a good start on a mars colony. Along this line I would venture that first explorations and probes of possible mining the asteroid belt would be coming in. But that is all still ahead of us thanks to the oil companies who have kept us dependant on fossil fuels. That is my opinion.

G***a, have you had any mysterious black helicopters flying near your house since you leaked that official figure of 270 aliens in the lock-up?

Desert Rat, You mean those guys that came to the office asking questions aren't really from I.N.S. Division Six?

And since were are leaking official information. I thought I'd let you all know that those unmarked 737's that leave Las Vegas Airport and head to parts undisclosed use the callsign "JANET." Which means in offical FAA lingo, Just-Another-Non-Existant-Transport.

But thats just between you and me

                  Don,

Okay, so how did you know that I used to hang around Hollywood all the time? Did you have me followed by the aliens who live there?

Allright, allright, I admit it,, yes, I actually knew some of the aliens.

Oh we've been contacted. Marilyn Manson is living proof. Most of us just haven't realized it yet.

(Oh yeah, they sent Don to shine Marilyn's shoes)

There may well be life on other planets. But I doubt very much if any other civilisation is trying to make contact with us.

Our nearest neighbour in space is Alpha Centauri. Even if they could travel at the speed of light, which as Einstein proved is impossible, it would take years to get hear. It is unlikely that plantes in the Alpha Centauri system could sustain life due to their position in relation to the star. So any Alien visitors to earth would have an even longer trip.

                      Live long and prosper.

Well you seem to forget that we humans still look at everything as having only three dimentions. The fourth dimention is time and if we can get time to be our servant instead of us being its then we would have one of the answers to faster than light speed. Thus making the distance to the stars a trip equal to the long sunday drives that some of us knew.

The science in Einstiens theory is 100 years old. We've learned a lot since then. Many things are possible.

Just imagine if their was a way to manipulate space into moving, but you don't actually move. Imagine a toy space ship sitting on a piece of paper. Now if you fold the paper in half and leave the toy ship on the other side, the ship is suddenly in another place. Space was manipulated.

Mike,That theory is the basis for the Star Trek Warp drive isn't it ?

While Einsteins theory of relativity is 100 years old it, unfortunatly, holds true.

The gravity and inertia at speeds approaching light speed are just to high for anything to sustain.

Mac, I don't know for a fact if that's the the Star Trek theory or not but I don't think so.

Also, keep in mind that Einstiens theory is just a theory. It has not been proven although it has been accepted. Dr. Steven Hawkings book 'A Brief History of Time', in which he attempts to explain the properties of the universe in laymans terms, mentions the way the universe is understood now, differs greatly from the time of Sir Isaac Newton. We still don't understand completely how it works, and the physical laws governing it. We just accept what the scientists changing view of things are now, until more data is gathered.

For example, Sir Isaac Newton is famous for his theory of gravity which is explained to children by telling them that he, Newton, sat under a tree and an apple fell on his head, and from this he explained gravity. But what he really did is to use calculus to mathmatically explain and prove why planets and moons traveled in the paths they do in the solar system. His view, and his science was not perfect and his math has been revised several times since. It was however good enough for another guy, Sir Edmond Halley, to use and to predict the orbit of the comet that was named after him.

So just keep in mind that we still don't fully understand how the universe is put together, but we are still learning. It may yet be possible to explore the galaxy. The methods to do it just haven't been explained yet.
