  • Research: Teens victimized in police Explorers program

12 out of 43,000 isn't exactly a large percentage, but even so, this is a bit disturbing.

    Here's the link.

(AP) -- At least a dozen teenagers assigned to work with police departments as part of the Boy Scouts' Law Enforcement Explorers program have allegedly been sexually abused by officers during the past year. In the past five years, such molestations number at least 25, according to criminologists' research being released Wednesday.

Sponsors have promised reforms to the program, which attracts tens of thousands of teens annually.

    Among recent cases:

It happens more often than people think. Explorers are not properly supervised, but its sad to see advisors doing this too.

Okay, why do they always look at the police groups?

Maybe they did, but why didn't they study and/or report on the fire or paramedic explorers? I bet they could have found a similar ratio of cases in other explorer programs. I doubt police (or even priests ) are that much more likely than a firefighter or paramedic (or teacher, carpenter, used car salesman, CEO and so on...) to abuse a child. It seems like any group probably has the same number of bad apples as any other.
I realize police are held to a higher standard- I guess it goes back to the fact that the media will always report on the few @$$holes, and make everyone pay.
Don't take life too seriously- you'll never come out of it alive.

43,000 Explorers and they came up with 12 who claim to have been molested. I doubt any other profession would have so few bad apples. What was the point of posting this article in the first place?

This is a story that's currently being talked about in the news. I've heard it reported on both CNN & NPR today. Given that the story concerns police & police explorers, it seemed like a topic that people might be interested in discussing.

I hope it doesn't look like I have some sort of agenda here -- I simply thought it was a topic that people might want to talk about.

Well, in all fairness, I also watch FoxNews -- see, I'm not all bad.

Haltom city is having a few problems lately with this. Also a judge was accused of making remarks about women prisoners, and wanting to do things that they didn't want to do. This judge was allowed to quit. The thing with the cops is new, but in Haltom, there was been a scandal brewing for a while. Local news had some guys on tv that said certain officers would come up to their house and get favors and stuff like that.

PD, I don't think you had posted this to cause any problems. I think if this was the case, you would have done this by now.

I wonder how the ratio for the other types of explorer posts compares.
