RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) -- A man who escaped police in Brooklyn, N.Y. a week ago was found at his cousin's house in California, police said.
Jaime Ramirez, 19, was apprehended in Riverside at about 2 p.m. Friday, according to New York police spokesman Officer Guy Braun. A Riverside police dispatcher would only confirm someone was taken into custody. The dispatcher had no other details.
Ramirez had been arrested last Saturday for allegedly possessing a small amount of marijuana, and two detectives were transporting him to a local police precinct in a van when he escaped, police said.
When one of the detectives opened the door of the van, Ramirez shoved him and ran away, police said. Both detectives were suspended from the police force after the department reviewed the incident.
Also Friday, a New York police union official accused Police Commissioner Ray Kelly of making scapegoats of individual officers after prisoner escapes.
Patrick Lynch, president of the New York Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, said officers are hampered by inadequate equipment and insufficient staffing.
Ramirez was one of a string of suspects who escaped from police custody in New York City this week.
