  • Hard to believe, but this happened to me!

This past Tuesday morning, at approx. 0330, I was robbed while driving my taxi cab.
Picked this guy up, and after we drove about 3 blocks, he puts a knife to my throat. He has me stop the car, demands the cash I had($60), and then the f-cker takes my cell phone & ignition key to my cab. Big tough creep then fled on foot like a scalded cat.

I radioed for PD to come to the scene. They had the K9 do a search, and I had an excellent description of the creep(black guy, looks like Will Smith's dimwit brother). Hopefully he will be caught before too long. I told PD they'd better catch him before I do!

To you Monday morning quarterbacks in here(few, I hope), and for those with the FAQ's, here goes:

Part of it was my fault. The location I picked up the puke at was questionable, and I didn't listen to my gut feeling.

I now drive a cab with a barrier in it. Most of my regular customers don't like it, but understand.

No, we can not carry guns or other offensive weapons in our cabs, thanks to the actions of some dim wits who drove cabs years ago. I was wishing I did have my gun; I could've dropped that ***hole like a hot potato, but I'd be the one in the soup.

I was not frightened beyond sensibility, and I didn't want to pee in my britches. Guess it came as no suprise to me, and I was more disgusted than anything else.

I won't take fares in that zone anymore, unless dispatch tells me it's a regular. We don't make much from most fares from that zone anyway, so to hell with it- they can walk for all I care.

I'm hoping this situation has not kindled a racial flame in me. So far, I don't think it has. I've had several blacks in my cab since, and most of them want a shot at this jerk. All in all, Des Moines has a pretty decent black population, but sadly the actions of just a few make them all look bad.
Nevertheless, I'm in no mood to hear rap or hip-hop music, nor listen to that trash talk some blacks think makes them cool for using. I threw a couple out of my cab the other night for just that. They were acting squirrelly anyway; proabably planning to run out on their fare. I asked them to cool it; they got indignant with me, and then asked me if I thought they were going to rob me(they didn't know I had been). I told them I wasn't about to find out, and to get out of my cab! Oh, they had to call me names, and talk a lot of BS, but they were the ones left standing there looking silly!

I know there are several ways I could've disarmed that puke, and fed that knife back to him, but he had the advantage, and my life is worth more than $60. I promptly called and suspended the service on my cell phone, which he never used anyway. I figured if I gave the creep what he wanted, he would just run away, like the punk I'm sure he is.

Time will tell from now on what happens.

I am glad you are o.k.; you sure are brave; I would have had to change my britches after that! I hope they catch the scumbag.

I'm really sorry this happened to you. Thank God you weren't injured. It sounds like you're being more careful now and taking better precautions. I think the lesson to be learned here is to ALWAYS trust your instincts. Sometimes you may not even know why you're feeling a certain way, but don't look for a reason.......just trust your gut always. It will seldom fail you.

I'm glad you weren't hurt and I hope they catch the dirtball. A friend of mine owned a cab business in a very small "well to do" town in lower Fairfield County and one of his drivers wasn't as lucky, the dirtball shoved a knife through the back of the seat and into the cab drivers back and then robbed him.
Luckily the driver survived but it shook my friend up so much he sold the business.

You did the right thing. Too bad you`re bitter but things like this do make people angry.

Driving a cab used to be a good way to moonlight but it got too dangerous. There are more cab drivers killed than cops.

Cab drivers are the #1 robbery victim nationwide. You did the right thing though. At least, that's what we teach in our robbery survival course. Get the robbery over with & let the robber leave. It's the safest thing to do.

LOL No, I dug this out of the mothballs, for reference purposes for a certain someone making comments from another thread.

You're pretty observant, and that is to be commended.
