NEW YORK (AP) -- More than 150 officers are leaving the New York Police Department to work for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, officials said.
Former NYPD officers make up as many as 160 of 192 new recruits entering a Port Authority training academy for former police officers next week.
Patrolmen's Benevolent Association spokesman Al O'Leary said low NYPD salaries were forcing officers to make the move.
"The NYPD has been and remains in denial about their ability to retain officers," O'Leary told Newsday. "It's pretty clear the job is not as attractive as it used to be because the salaries aren't as attractive."
Police Department spokesman Michael O'Looney told the Daily News that, "We wish them well."
Port Authority spokesman Alan Hicks said the agency was not targeting NYPD officers in its recruitment efforts.
In April, the first class of Port Authority police to graduate since Sept. 11 included 72 former NYPD officers.
