Ex-Black Panther loses legal bid
PHILADELPHIA - Mumia Abu-Jamal, a former Black Panther sentenced to death for killing a police officer, waited too long before disclosing another man's confession for the 1981 shooting, a judge ruled Thursday. Jamal, whose case has become a symbol for activists who charge police brutality, had filed an emergency motion in May seeking a deposition from Arnold Beverly, who says he and another man were hired to kill the officer. US District Judge William H. Yohn rejected the motion, saying Jamal knew of Beverly's claim since at least June 8, 1999. (AP)
