  • Saving Private Ryan

I just saw Saving Private Ryan for the first time. I can't believe I sat through 2 1/2 hours of blood, guts and destruction. It was a great movie though. I was thinking that maybe private Ryan might end up dead and the guy standing over the grave in the beginning was Tom Hanks. But, it turned out to be the opposite.

Has everyone seen it? Did you like it? I am not one for war movies, but this kept my attention through the whole thing.

To do it justice, it MUST be seen on the BIG screen. When I saw it....after the movie was over....not a single word was said as the patrons left the theater. It was a sobering experience.

IMO, however, Band of Brothers is better.

Thank goodness my husband wasn't home because he would have laughed at me. I was getting choked up at the end. I can understand how everyone would leave without saying a word.

Band of Brothers, I never heard of it. But, then again I am not a big movie watcher unless something comes out on video and I finally get around to renting it. What year did it come out?

Band of Brothers is an HBO special. It came out about a year ago. It's currently making the rounds again.

In Blackhawk Down I became SO ANGRY when the Pakistani troops REFUSED to give the Rangers a ride in their APCs. IMO, that Pakistani driver should have been yanked out of the APC and left along the roadside.

Have you seen the sequel "Shaving Ryans Privates"? [Eek!]

TRPS, I loved the movie and was chocked up at the end. I went to see it a second time and thought I would be over the chocked up stuff, but the second time I got chocked up at the begining and the end. Have you seen Patriot and Gladiator yet? Those along with Braveheart are must see movies.

I too thought Saving Private Ryan was excellent.

Please allow me to add some other movie reviews:

Blackhawk Down- Great movie, gut wrenching. P'd me off that that the military was refused the armor they requested by that gutless Clinton administration.

Monster's Inc- My 3 and 6 year old loved it, enough said (I liked it too).

In the Bedroom- Excellent acting all around. Kind of a depressing but very interesting story.

Monster's Ball- For guys, it's worth it just to see 'all' of Halle Berry. [Eek!] This too was kinda glum but pretty good. I do think it was overrated by the critics when it came out last year.

Ocean's Eleven- Although I think George Clooney loves to hear the sound of his own voice, I gotta admit the movie was entertaining. You just have to supress your overwhelming urges to say "bull****" throughout the far fetched plot.

The Replacements- Starring Keanu Reeves as a washed up football player seeking one last shot at redemption. Gene Hackman, who apparently was suffering from a bout of temporary insanity, also 'stars' in this trainwreck. Bleeping awful. Shut it off 1/2 way through, never to return. I've seen better acting in Porno movies.

Lord of the Rings- I am not a fan of the whole JRR Tolken thing but I thought the movie was excellent. Cool characters and impressive special effects that don't take over the movie. It ends abruptly which leaves you craving for Part two of the trilogy.

American Pie II- It was pretty good, just about what I expected. Stifler is hilarious. My main beef is not enough Shannon Elizabeth like she was in the original. [Wink]

Naughty Nurses Part IV- Ron Jeremy (the luckiest hairy, fat guy alive) was at his usual best....ummm....never mind.

                          Shooter,

You should read the book "Black Hawk Down" by Mark Burden, I think (I'll check the name when I get home later). The movie absolutely pales when in comparision to the book -- especially since the 10th Mountain is inferred to be Pakistani/Indonesean troops in the movie, and is really part of the US Army. Plus, I was surprised with how many liberties the movie took with the book. Still a very shocking, in your face movie, but for my money, since there was so little characterization (due to such a large cast), I didn't quite feel the emotional connection -- Hanks death in SPR hit me much harder then just about all of the deaths in BHD (but that was balanced out by, "wait, BHD was real" ... still, I felt the emotion much more reading the book).

PS: Band of Brothers comes out on DVD in November.

Just as a side-note, they never asked for armor...that criticism came later, and has stuck. I don't remember the specifics, but could dig them up if anyone is truly interested.

However, that doesn't make the Clinton Administration any less gutless. When American troops are killed on a humanitarian mission, you don't pick up and leave...you level the area and the people involved. That's why we have aircraft carriers...

I'll agree with the lack of characterization...I was really looking forward to Holleywood dealing with a "combat jack", but I guess we'll have to wait another twenty years...

I will never see Blackhawk Down and neither will my husband. Hubby also being in the military...and Clinton's admin ticking us off so bad.

The others, I'd be willing to watch, thanks all for the reviews and ideas!

LOL Shaving Ryan's privates. That is TOO FUNNY! Hey, but I bet it would be a great flick. [Eek!]
