  • Great Brazos River Balloon Hunt

I finally found a nice place on the Brazos with road access. It's about 10 miles west of Mineral Wells if anyone is interested.

My son wanted to go try out his Mossberg 590, and I wanted to try the sights on my Win 1300, so we went. I let one one of the sons freinds use a single shot .410. I wasn't sure what to shoot at though as I had no clay launcher or anything like that, until I had a brainstorm.(Or maybe it was a bump on the head!)

Balloons! We blew up a bunch of them and set them put against a natural dirt backstop about 30 to forty yards away, and let it rip! Those ballons popped like they were full of hot air! I even popped a few with slugs. Man that was fun.

So then we picked up all or 100 or so emptys and balloon DNA and tried it with a .22 pistol. While not nearly as good as the scatterguns, it was fun as well.

I highly recommend balloon hunting in your area.

Note: We made sure to clean up all our mess, and didn't shoot any critters and even checked with the Palo Pinto county Sheriff before going.

Try tiing a few onto tree limbs and let the wind bob them around. Instant 'moving' targets.

If you want a REAL challenge when using a scoped .22, try eggs, lemons, etc. The impact is dramatic and there's nothing to pick up.

Lay an empty spray can of red paint end-on to the shooter and then try to hit the base of the can. Excellent results everytime! [Eek!]

I have this bruise on my shoulder from repeated buckshot and slug rounds. Ouch!
