Back from Afghanistan, Marine shoots would-be carjacker

MONTGOMERY, Ala.(AP) - A Marine sergeant based in North Carolina who served in Afghanistan earlier this year shot and killed a would-be carjacker.
Sgt. James C. Lowery, 22, returned fire after being shot in the face in the drive-thru lane of a fast-food restaurant. He was listed in fair condition Thursday at a Montgomery hospital. His father, James Eugene Lowery, said the bullet hit his son in the top left cheek and stopped near his voice box. "He comes back from Afghanistan safe and whole. Then he comes home on leave to have rest and peace and this happens," the father said.

Police said Lowery got out of his Chevrolet Suburban when approached by a gunman in the drive-thru lane of a McDonald's restaurant Tuesday night. The gunman shot Lowery, who was then able to get his .45-caliber pistol from the car and shoot his assailant multiple times. Dead at the scene was Thaddeus Antone, 19, of Montgomery.

The fatal shooting is viewed as self-defense and no charges were filed, police spokesman Lt. Huey Thornton said. It will be reviewed by a grand jury following routine procedure.

Lowery, who was on leave until Sunday, serves with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252, based at the Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, N.C.

Lowery's father said the unit flies tankers than can refuel aircraft in flight. Lowery, who got married in January, went to Afghanistan a week later and served there for about two months.

To think that a poor misquided carjacker was actually shot and killed is absolutley terrible! The marine should have willing surrendered his car and hitchiked to the hospital. While they were looking for the bullet in his face he could have called the POLICE and gave them a full report. NOT !

I concur with PeicanDriver. If the marine would have been in any of the anti gun states, he would have had his gun confinscated and been tried for murder.

Thank GOD it was in Alabama and justice prevailed.

There's alot of buzz about this where I live.I live 5 minutes from the Camp Lejeune main gate and 45 minutes from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point where this Marine is stationed.I think its awesome.Being a Marine no longer on active duty it gives me that warm fuzzy feeling

I say 2 thumbs WAY up for that Marine.

Carjacking and California; funny that should come up. This gal from my class in High School was serving in the Air Force, making a career of it, when it was cut short. She was stationed in California, and was killed in a G-D carjacking!

God help any ***hole who thinks he is going to carjack me. If I don't kill him outright, I'll pepper spray him, and dance the fandango on his face! That's the least that lowlife deserved.

From this Air Force reservist and son of a career Marine, a well-deserved OOO-RAH as well as my wishes for a speedy recovery.
It's funny, the Democrats always talk about "code words" the Republicans use (social security reform = starving grandma and grandpa). My favorite Democratic code word is gun control...taking guns from the ones who believe in law and order. I'll step down from my soap box now.
