  • Did anyone else get hit?

My ISP's(MPINet) home page got hit Saturday. It was kind of strange. One minute you're logged on and the page loads fine, the next minute, the screen is red with a waving Chinese flag and the Chinese national anthem playing

JACKSONVILLE -- Anti-American messages were posted on Web sites belonging to the Jacksonville City Council and Duval County clerk of courts by computer hackers from China, city officials said.

A black box with text that cursed the U.S. government was posted on parts of the sites, which were hit around 7 p.m. Sunday, officials said. The Clay County clerk of court's Internet site was defaced Thursday, an attack also traced to China, office spokesman Mike Mauldin said.

A Florida Times-Union reporter who saw the postings early Monday alerted city officials, who then removed the council and committee agenda pages for an hour to get rid of the bad text. Duval Clerk of Courts Jim Fuller said he removed the posting from the traffic citation payment page on his site after city hall officials called him about it.

The city upgraded the computers that run the sites to a more secure system after the attacks, officials said.

City technicians said the postings may be part of an attempt by hackers in China to protest the loss of fighter pilot Wang Wei, whose jet collided with a Navy reconnaissance plane last month over the South China Sea.

On April 26, the National Infrastructure Protection Center sent an e-mail to Webmasters warning them about possible cyber attacks from Chinese hackers. The activity was expected to take place between April 30 and Monday, the two-year anniversary of the bombing of the Chinese embassy in Yugoslavia by U.S. warplanes, the e-mail noted.
