A bank robbery suspect was shot and killed by police officers Monday after a chase through a busy parking lot that also went the wrong way down a major thoroughfare, police chief Jerry Galvin said.
Five officers were injured during the incident, most from being struck by the suspect's vehicle as the driver tried to pull away and officers were on foot attempting to stop him.
One officer was injured when her vehicle was involved in an accident in the parking lot.
The airbag of her patrol car engaged, but she suffered a broken leg and a broken arm.
The suspect's car was surrounded and stopped several times — with shots fired on all at least three occasions — during the pursuit in the Albertson's parking lot at San Mateo and Montgomery NE.
The chase stopped when the suspect's vehicle was surrounded in an alley behind a restaurant near the Albertson's.
The suspect was found with an unknown device in his hand after the pursuit ended, and nearby buildings were evacuated as police bomb technicians investigated, Galvin said.
Before the chase ended, the suspect was pursued as he drove westbound in the eastbound lanes of Montgomery in front of the same shopping center.
The suspect and one pursuing officer drove between cars coming at them before the suspect turned off Montgomery.
The suspect eventually became stuck after pulling behind the Pancho's restaurant in the Albertson's center.
The car was surrounded and bumped by multiple marked and unmarked police units.
The suspect allegedly robbed two Wells Fargo banks earlier in the day — one on Menaul NE and one on East Central, Galvin said.
The bank robber, who was wearing women's clothes and a wig, threatened the employees of the second bank with a bomb, Galvin said.
