Is it really necessary to own one of hese living in the suburbs? What's the point of driving a gas guzzling navigator, excursion, escalade or a pointless plastic RAV 4? I just see them as a traffic nussance. when armed with dvd, gps, and cell phone drivers in these become more deadly than a pack of taliban. discuss.

An SUV is almost manditory with three kids and traveling any distance. With three kids, almost anytime you go anywhere, youre going to have borrowed kids. Then there is hauling all their junk. When we go out of town for a weekend tournament , its like a major safari.
As long as I can afford the payments, insurance, and gas, I'll have one.RADAR is the 8th wonder of the world.

I agree completely. I have one and with three kids you really need it. I also get sick of driving my car and hearing "He's touching me again" And besides to each his/her own.

I don't drive an SUV, but I do drive a full-size pickup. While it doesn't get great gas mileage, it's not too bad. And when you live in a semi-rural area, the ground clearance comes in handy.
Besides, since this was started by an obviously extremely biased individual with little or no common sense, WHO CARES??
(I think this is one our former visitors that just can't quite get the message)
Addendum: I've seen more of those "toys" installed in the older, less expensive vehicles than in anything else.

ask a simple question and you are already marked for death. interesting. i leave things out in my profile for reasons of my choosing but my email is there so i'm legit. in any event the pick up in semi rural area i can understand. and quite frankly a 67 mustang will kill more gas than 2 suv's so it has nothing to do with the environment. what i want to know is why in the suburbs is such a large vehicle needed? i can see the kids issue but quite frankly an ford winstar (which is pretty kickbutt as far as extras) is about 10 times safer than a durango or the BMW X-5. Pound for pound a volvo is safer than all of the above. But why good does a land rover or lincoln navigator do in manhattan or los angeles? Wranglers, Tacomas, F 250's these have some point (unless of course you chrome them out and lower them) but what is the point of an escalde?
and as an additional note...no i've never been here I just happed to hear of this place via word of mouth and thought i would give it a shot

The answer to your question is very simple, I have kids and junk that needed to be hauled around. I have the money to haul them around in an Expedition, so they get hauled around in an Expedition. An Expedition is what my wife wanted to haul the kids and junk around in.What momma wants, momma gets as long as I can pay for it. Its my money, so what do you really care?RADAR is the 8th wonder of the world.

Personal choice is the first thing that comes to mind. I live in the suburbs, and can't stand the thought of driving a mini-van. It's the whole image thing. Yeah, like Andre says, "image is everything". I've got a Cherokee 4X4. It's only been in 4 high twice, but I love having the availability there.
Durability. Yeah, mid 80's Caravans are all over the roads, but how do they look? Most look like s*** warmed over.
I don't buy a vehicle for the safety it provides others on the road, I buy it for mine and my family's safety. If you don't like SUV's, then don't buy one, but don't come down on them as being the devil or even saying that someone in the 'burbs has no use for one. Who's really to say who's got a use for what?

see its not that I hate them or don't think peopel should own them obviously if you have the money and a family you aren't going to buy a boxter or a lexus if you need the room. however in tight streets time and time again i see the suv as causing a problem especially being hit from behind by one because the driver was more occupied with what was on the radio than slowing down to the red light. More so on the highway where being higher off the ground there is more room to be out of control and err at high speeds. I've seen Explorers and Tahoes blazing down the highway at 85+ mph ram into medians simply because the driver couln't control the vehilce. I have no problem with people who need a vehicle of this sort because they need to haul equipment or need the power etc. but people who use them for flash and think that they have cars are a definate hazard.
