  • List of states that will hire LOE's with Green Cards -

    Hey everyone,

Some of you might remember me - some of you wont!. Im a british Citizen who is here legally in the US with a Green card.

Prior to emmigrating here i was a Police officer of 5 years service with the Metropolitan Police, London England. Now that im here id Like to get back into law enforcement but was hampered from joining in my home state of Florida as im a non-citizen.

So after some research myself and the help of several members on here ive complied a state by state list of those who require citizenship and those who dont.

I hope that it is of use to anyone like myself, here goes -

      One Question ???

      What is an LOE ???
Great first they take our Micky D's and Landscaping Jobs now they can be cops too. I see no humor in that.

Which would you prefer - a well-qualified and experienced officer with a green card, or an unqualified person with no experience, whose sole claim to fame is that his mom hapened to be here at the critical moment?

I had a trainee some years ago that was a former British officer. He is and was one of the best cops I ever saw.

              It was a typo!

I meant to type LEO but im a dumbass and was typing too fast for my own good.

At the risk of starting a huge immigration debate can i just say this.

We had the same problems in England with immigration that you guys have here. I know why some of you feel a slight hostility towards us.

I have a 2 year College degree, 5 years of experience with the Met Police in a boatload of different duties (during which i had the highest arrest rate in the division). Came out with an "exemplary" service record and 12 assistant commissioners commendations for a variety of things such as tackling armed bank robbers whilst unarmed myself.

But im stuck doing a crappy security managers Job - and the only reason ive not been picked up by a department is because i dont have a piece of paper in my hand saying im a US citizen - Sure ill be applying for Naturalisation when my time comes, but thats 3 years away.

Im not here to "take anyones job" away from them. My wife is American, and she's a Cop here. I didnt Come to america to claim welfare or sponge off the Government, Nor am i here as im fleeing oppression etc

The only reason im here is because she's here, I Gave up a Hell of a lot by coming here - including the Job I excelled at.

Now that i am here, all i want to do is lead a law abiding life, settle into america lifestyle, pay taxes, speak English and get back into the Police.

I dont think the vast majority of americas will have a problem with that.

I am in the same boat as you. At least since you married a US Citizen you only have to wait three years rather than five. (three years from the date you receive your temporary green card).

Impressive list by the way! Thanks a lot. I wanted to do something like that myself, but never did. Now I don't have to

                    Thanks,
                    Kai

                        napes,

The irony here, m'man, is that the British were the original Americans.

I hope you're your successful in landing a LE job here in the states. I would bet LAPD would be a good bet.

                        Good luck,

                        JW

Since when, in recent years, have Qualifications had anything to do with hirings and promotions? Do a promotions test in a large department and see how many lawsuits are filed by those whose sole claim to fame is- well, you figure it out.

You did a lot of research, and very thoughtful to share the fruits of your labor!

I work for San Diego Sheriff's, and we have at least one officer from Ireland, and several from Australia/New Zealand.

Oh yeah - and we're hiring!

The caveat is the cost of living sucks right now

                              Napes,

Some ideas to speed up the citizenship process...

Join the military reserves. Just one day of active duty (you'll do plenty when at Basic Training) will qualify you to apply for citizenship right then. I realise this may not be an option for everybody but looks good when applying for most PD's too.

Check out the marriage 'back door" as mentioned above. I do remember hearing about a shorter qualifying residency period but I never looked into it.

You can submit your application packet for citizenship 6 months before your qualifying residency period is attained.

The application pipeline for most police jobs is pretty long, in a lot of instances it can be several years, especially for larger metro depts. Even if they do require citizenship, you could apply anyway. When completing the application packet just write "pending" under the citizenship question. Chances are by the time you reach any stage of actually being hired and questioned on this you will already be a US citizen. Of course, this may not work at all, but why count yourself out by not applying. Let the dept tell you to "get lost, ya goddam foreigner !!!!"

BTW, you can't be too busy in your job if you have all the time and resources to research this thread !!!!!

Or else you have no life !!!!!

                              Later.
Christ, you know it ain't easy...
