A day honoring Irish traditions or an excuse to get as drunk as possible and act like a total moron?

Every year, I lean more towards the latter answer.

When i was younger, it was just another excuse to go out and party.

It looks to be more of a reason for serious drinking, but i did see parades that looked to be honoring traditions. Altho some of the older guys doing dances with their wives looked like they had a rough nite...

I think there is a lot of time honored traditions associatred with St. Pats day but I also think too many people use it to get totally idiotic. This year they extended the celebration over 5 days since it was on a sunday. Why? Is not one day of getting stupid good enough?
