  • A Rumbling?

Anyone in the south Jersey/Philly area hear something about 10 minutes ago... like an explosion or earthquake?? No, i'm not losing it. My dog woke up out of a sound, dreaming sleep and jumped up to look also. Just wondering...

It was me. I overindulged at dinner. We had corned beef and cabbage.

    Sorry.

I had this happen to me a few years back while in Florida. The whole condo shook violently, and it was as if the very earth was rumbling. I was in Orlando at the time, and I don't think that there is a history of seismic activity in that region. The weirdest part was, it happened about 5 minutes after the Oklahoma City Federal Building was bombed. I thought perhaps it was an aftershock that travelled across the nation, but I suppose now that I think about it, that theory sounds rather stupid. Any ideas, anyone?

It is possible you experienced a Sonic Boom. When it happened to me, it shook the building making the windows rattle, a bit un-nerving to say the least.

A sonic boom is the noise from two shock waves which a supersonic aircraft continuously generates as it flies supersonically through the atmosphere.

"For today's supersonic aircraft in normal operating conditions, the peak overpressure varies from less than one pound to about 10 pounds per square foot for a N-wave boom. Peak overpressures for U-waves are amplified two to five times the N-wave, but this amplified overpressure impacts only a very small area when compared to the area exposed to the rest of the sonic boom. The strongest sonic boom ever recorded was 144 pounds per square foot and it did not cause injury to the researchers who were exposed to it. The boom was produced by a F-4 flying just above the speed of sound at an altitude of 100 feet. In recent tests, the maximum boom measured during more realistic flight conditions was 21 pounds per square foot. There is a probability that some damage shattered glass, for example, will result from a sonic boom. Buildings in good repair should suffer no damage by pressures of less than 16 pounds per square foot. And, typically, community exposure to sonic boom is below two pounds per square foot. Ground motion resulting from sonic boom is rare and is well below structural damage thresholds accepted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and other agencies."

            Good job Neltja:

            you beat me to it.

Ocasionally we get call of an "explosion" being heard "somewhere" but no one can pin it down. It does sound like a big bang and it does make the ground rumble..kinda like thunder.

We have an training base for the Airforce at Little rock. It is 70 miles away, but for a supersonic fighter thats only a several minute flight. They like to juke and jive through the Ozark Mountains here and fly nap of the earth. Sometimes it gets very loud.

More than likey, if you hear an "explosion",and no damage reports come in, its probably a sonic boom by military aircraft playing around.

                  One more thing...

A sonic BOOM only occurs when the jet breaks the speed of sound and only at that instant. It does not do it constantly. If it did, everytime we saw a military jet doing MACH1+ it would sound like constant thunder.

Different altitudes, land masses, weather conditions , distance and any variation thereof will make a sonic boom sound different.

I live in California, right between an air force base and a marine depo.

When I was a kid the third side of the triangle I was stuck in was an island off the coast they would bomb at least once a week.

It's a source of much amusement to see the tourists go scrambling into doorways and under tables when the marines go flying by and rattle the windows.

You can tell who's a local, we just put our hands over our double mocha esspressos (non-fat cream, white chocolate flakes) to keep them from bouncing off the table.

Was it a NAVY airbase or Airforce ?

Probally was a sonic boom. Last week the space shuttle broke the barrier over New Orleans landing in Florida. They however put it on the news so people wouldn't call the police since it was 330am. It still almost knocked me out of bed and the kids had gotten up to hear it.

                              Watchman~

Did I misspeak? There's a marine base, a marine airstation 20 miles south, and a naval base south of the airstation.

So lots of jets, all the time. They don't do bombing runs anymore, it was making the locals nervous.
