  • 2 firemen killed in Memphis, TN

According to the article, these 2 firemen thought there might be employees trapped inside the burning building. As it turned out, there were no employees inside.

The 911 caller advised that the store manager might be trapped inside, so they went in to get him. While inside, the roof collapsed and trapped two of three firemen. It was 15 minutes or more before they could get to them, by then it as too late. A substantial amount of aerosols of various kinds, and other flammables in the store made this fire unusually intense. Over 30 pieces of equipment responded, nearly 150 firefighters were on scene.

Turns out that the manager of the store was the 911 caller, he had stolen several thousand from the store safe and started the fire to cover his theft. He has since confessed and is in federal lock-up on first degree murder/arson charges. The FD union president has already written a letter to AG John Ashcroft imploring the feds to seek the death penalty.

I just heard today that the 3rd firefighter who survived is already in counseling. He's having a hard time getting over why the other two died and he didn't. My family knows a lot of Memphis firemen and we were just hoping they weren't anyone we knew. As it turns out we didn't know them but it is no less a tragedy. My thoughts and prayers will be with them and their families.
