  • Just great! Ford changes....

.....the body style on the F-150 for 2004 AND drops the 4.2L V-6 engine. WHY mess with success AND proven performance?

I HAD planned on trading for a new 4x4 truck next year....one I had INTENDED to keep for 8-10 years. NOW it looks like I'll have to HUNT for a USED 2002-03 to satisfy my requirements. NOT a happy FORD owner at the moment........

They're easy to spot. They own a couple of them and replace one with another when it finally wears out.

More happy Ford owners than I can imagine.

Sure there are! IF they own a Mazda, Jaguar, Volvo, Aston Martin, or a Range Rover...

Ford's simply reacting to the marketplace. On top of its traditional competition with the Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra and Dodge Ram, it now has to contend with the Toyota Tundra (which sold far better than most anticipated) and later this year, the Nissan Titan. Ford simply can't afford to sit still.

The current F-150 was introduced in early 1996 as a 1997 model. Nowadays, 7 years is a LONG time to go without any sort of styling changes. For example, in the same time frame the Honda Accord has had 3 distinctive styles.

In the past pickup truck manufacturers could extend the life of a product for a long time with only minor styling differences, but I'm afraid those days are gone. GM's current truck line was introduced only 4 years ago, and this year it's already had a major facelift.

As far as discontinuing the V-6: don't most F-150 buyers buy the V8? If so it might not make economic sense for Ford to continue offering an engine that few people buy. Ford may also have a small V-8 in the works that's just as fuel efficient.

And yet they all still look like econo-boxes.

And it's a major cash cow for Honda

Car makers make more money off of selling parts than they do selling the vehicle.

And that's coming from a mechanic, how worrisome...

Hey, MikeTx, what's your opinion on Volvos, then?
