  • Spanish for LE-- best bet

I am trying to better myself as a police canditate. Anyone know of a good book, program, CD, DVD etc that will help me learn Spanish for LE?

    Thanks in advance

    cd-rom

I have a CDROM from NIJ, it's really good if you know no spanish at all. It spells out all the words phoenetically. Domestic violence, felony stops, traffic stops, etc. are all covered on it.

here is the link to order it

IMO nothing can replace experience. I would just recommend taking a class when you get hired if Survival Spanish isn't part of your academy.

Some of those audio/video programs are good. Use them and then try to spend a day or 2 surrounded by Spanish speaking only. Learn some slang, some culture differences, etc. That would help greatly....

Actually, spending a day at Wal-Mart in a community with a large number of Spanish speaking residents is not a bad idea. Look like a civilian, take someone who can translate and you are in a good area where people will use slang, eveyday words, etc.....

            Pretty good advice Straight up....

Assuming you're short on time and busy busy busy, I'd suggest investing in a software language suite. You can learn at home, during your downtime, and at your own pace. The best out there by far would be Rosetta Stone. I've been looking into picking up a copy of the Greek language version, considering my Greek is pretty shabby..it's a little pricey, but well worth the money -- even with my measly paycheck.
Anyway, check it out: Rosetta Stone Software

I've found it for $179.00 @ Shopping.com ..but you may be able to find an awesome deal on Ebay. You can never go wrong with price on Ebay.

Hey, you may even be able to write it off come tax season.
Hope this helps, and good luck.

I'll tell you what NOT to get. Do not get the Tell Me More series. It's $50 of worthless crap. It's like they had the language specialists doubling as programmers. The tests are also terrible and not very comprehensive at all. It seems like there is no structure to it at all.

I'm interested in this thread as well. I know there are some good programs out there that delve into the different aspects of Spanish.
-I don't feel you honor someone by creating a physical gesture (the salute). You honor them by holding them in memory and, in law enforcement, proceeding in vigilant, ethical police work. You honor this country or deceased soldiers or whatever you're honoring when you salute a flag by thinking, feeling, and continuing a life of freedom.
