OK...so I'm ready to 'branch out'. As far as I know, there are ZERO home security consultants in my area. I don't want to install security systems, simply inspect homes/businesses and offer professional, honest advice on 'hardening' the defenses. How do I get started in checking into state licensing requirements? TIA

I have an electrician friend who installs security systems. He did our home and we have all sorts of motion detectors, weight on the floor detectors, glass breaking detectors, cameras, etc, etc. There's lots of high tech stuff you can use. Our electrician friend does not use any kind of "security consultant" BUT that's an interesting idea. Maybe you can hook up with some people like electricians or new home builders and get them to start offering your services to their clients before they install the systems. You MUST be up on the latest systems though. No one wants an outdated system. If you can get to new home owners while the house is being built that's the best time. You might want to get into monitering the systems once they are installed too.

Shooter, you might check with your States Insurance Board (or whoever regulates insurance in your State).
I think that most "Security Surverys" are underwritten by insurance companies for their own benefit, but it can be a worthwhile pursuit.
Worth a try, maybe...

Shooter,
I would suggest joining American Society For Industrial Security. The web site: http://www.asisonline.org
They have a few chapters in TN. Not sure which part of TN you are in. The chapters are located in :
Chapter Name Chapter Area Chapter ID
Smoky Mountain Knoxville, TN area 075
Memphis Memphis, TN area 061
Mid-Tennessee Nashvillle, TN area 052
Chattanooga Tri-State Chattanooga, Cleveland, Sweetwater, Dalton, Monteagle 034
This is a great Org. If you are considering the Security Business, I would highly recommend getting involved. There is a Bul. Brd. on the site and thier magazine site as well: http://www.securitymanagement.com
This should get ya started. You'll be surprised if you join at the networking and the contacts you will make. You'll also be surprised at some of the saleries these people make when you start "bumping elbows" with them.
Good Luck!
