I thought he looked like a dufus is that one just because it looked so "staged". The melodrama of the cop coming home to his family who never knows if today will be the last day they see him....He reminds me of a more successful version of Detroit's former promotion-test-scandal chief, Ike McKinnon. He flocked to the cameras like a moth. The local media loved him because he always played right to them. Now he does everything from tiny ads in the newspaper for chiropractors to short spots on the news on how not to get mugged in the parking lot of the mall at Christmastime. He also hit the bigtime by scoring a job as seurity director at the new Compuware headquarters. I sold my stock after they decided to relocate to downtown Detroit and hire him. Thank God too, it's the only tech stock I made money on in the last couple years before its downward plummet.

I cant help it if i dont like Bunnell. he's irritating! John Walsh is overly dramatic sometimes too, but there's a huge difference between the two. so Bunnell made a name for himself? so did Joe Millionaire...

It's also clear from the old Portland episodes of COPS that he was definitely "hamming it up" for the camera, and prepping himself for a future in showbusiness.

About calling himself "Sheriff"...according to Multnomah SO's own website he was indeed THE Sheriff of Multnomah County, but only for six months. He got the job because then-Sheriff Robert Skipper retired prior to his term expiring (Bunnell was Chief Deputy at the time). When the election finally came, Bunnell lost to the candidate from Portland PD. I guess all that fame wasn't enough to get him elected

Whether or not being appointed Sheriff, then losing the job six months later to an outsider, entitles one to use the term "Sheriff" long after he left LE is subject to debate. I guess "Interim Sheriff who Lost the Job Six Months Later" John Bunnell is a bit of a mouthful

I met him in New Orleans one time when I was in college for a LE competition. He was a nice guy, but its hard to tell how the real person is.

I always thought that he was an honorary Sheriff, and they gave him the badge after he got relatively big. Just hearsay though.

The guy isn't claiming to be the best cop in the world, or anything. He's a show host, and he's acting like a show host.

Sounds like good work if you can get it.

He's making good money for himself and his family, and probably gets to spend more days a year with them than most of us get to spend with ours. He doesn't have to do shift work, or get called out on crime scenes. He doesn't have to testify in court on his off days or during his vacation.

Evidently, he has an aptitude for this kind of work and does it well enough to be successful at it. Why begrudge the man his success?

I am happy that he has been able to do well outside of LE. I'm happy for him, or any of my brothers and sisters in LE, who are able to do well for themselves.

Aw, I wouldn't be so hard on the guy. He was presented an opportunity to get the brass ring and he went for it. Now he's probably pulling down more than all of us combined. Sure, he's overly melodramatic. Yeah, he's a bit of a glory hound. Maybe he comes across as a bit of boob sometimes. But that's what the producers want and he gives it to them. You may notice Brunnell's show is produced by the same people who do COPS. They must be doing something right -- the show's been on (in syndication or otherwise) for years.

I have a little bit of an issue with him being labeled as 'Sheriff' -- from what I've heard (hearsay only) that he fell into a sheriff's position after his boss left and he never won an election. But hey, if it's not false, and the producers want to pay me a lot of money to do so, what the he11.

Cops comes on at 5 here, and I saw the same episode. Bunnel kills me, he has to be the biggest camera hog in the history of the series. Have you seen the episode where he is riding with the officers and "hosting" the show? It's a classic, filled with his questions to crackhead thieves as to "why they want to do this to themesleves?" That guy cracks me up.
