What are the proper steps and the precautions to take when you execute an unknown risk stop? Like, if there are backset passengers do you stop near the rear of the vehicle to contact the driver? Or do you go ahead and turn your back on the passengers and go to the driver's window to make contact?
Also, what is the role of a second officer in an unknown risk stop?

This is not a topic that should be discussed in a public forum. No sense in giving the bad guys any more information than they already have.

With a car load of gangsters. After I pulled them over, I usually will pull in front of their vehicle, this way, when I get out, I would have my eyes on all of them. Then, With my flashlight in my left hand and my cite book in my right, I would step to the back of my trunk, right in front of the suspects grill, this way, I am ready to light them up with my flashlight and cite them. Being between the cars is a very smart tactical position because if they decide to run me or pin me against my trunk, I would just jump on their hood and the assignment of fault would be on them because they rear-ended me.

Occiferdave's way is acceptable, but I prefer to do my felony stops a little bit differently. I usually just get out of the car and say hello, walk to the rear of my vehicle in a really friendly and unthreatening manner and pull out the M249 and open fire. I usually empty the entire box magazine into the vehicle. If there are any survivors I usually reload and open fire again. I have never had to reload twice.

Hey Spec, that sounds like a lot of paperwork documenting the discharge of a department weapon... unless it's your personnel weapon of course but, ammo is getting so expensive these days it's a shame to waste it on a few slimeballs.

I just pull up along side their vehicle, tap the horn, smile, politely hand signal them to pull over, and as the driver has his undivided attention towards me I force their vehicle into a bridge abutment, light pole, tree, or other solid object along the shoulder of the highway. In most cases the BG's end up either unconscious or severely disorientated making them easy to handle.
The damage that may occur to the cruiser is also easily explained... "The *%$#@[email protected]&)'s tried to force me into other vehicular traffic and I had to take evasive action to protect the public"

I got myself in a bad situation many years ago on a simple traffic stop one morning about 4 am. While in a one man car I pulled over a vehicle who made an illegal turn on a no turn signal. I noticed the driver to be a what appeared to be a lone bf. Upon approaching the vehicle I didn't notice that there were 3 males laying on the back seat. They appeared to be unconcious. I ordered the female to walk to the hood of the car and called for backup. I then noticed a few shotguns laying on their laps. I caustiously approached the other side of the car and started pitching shotguns, handguns,and rifles into a large parking lot. I could hear units approaching as they started to wake up and try to get out of the vehicle. I held the door close for a while as they begin to push the door watching everyone's hands. The first unit arrived and the woman at the front of the car stabbed the first female officer that arrived in the chest with a needle. As other units arrived we proceeded to get the other three out of the back seat. That night wasn't my night for the good Lord to take me. What had happened was they had a few minutes earlier robbed a convience store and the female drove and the 3 males got in the back seat and shot up with heroin. The woman was driving the car. Luckly they were just to loaded to do anything when I walked up on the stopped vehicle. Upon further investigation we found a cache of weapons in the trunk since they had also burgularized UPS. They had cash in their pockets from the convience store and laying all over the back seat. I was lucky to learn a valueable lesson on making simple traffic stop that night. I was lucky to live another day to make another one. Nothing is just simple.

We never shoot at anybody down here. Instead we call it "summoning assistance".

Down here in Texas we just set the car on fire and whack 'em over the head as they come out.
