DIRTY MINDS! lol Below is the URL to my secret beach here in Florida. I don't tell too many people about it because it is so pristine. I go and spend the whole day there by myself! Sometimes, I see people riding their horses!Don't tell anyone I told you about my secret beach!! lol

Hey, Mitzi, I have a question for ya...

Here in California, all beaches are public (though getting access to them can be tough). I heard that beaches on the East Coast can be privately owned... That true?

No, they can not be privately owned. It's a constant battle though because houses on the beach are supposed to provide public access and they don't. It's rarely enforced and it's sometimes hard to find parking spaces. It's getting very nasty at one beach where a home owner threatened beachgoers with a gun. Add hotels who buy up as much parking space as they can and it gets difficult to just get to a beach. They did draw the line when stupid homeowners put fences all the way from their house into the water. The beaches are supposed to be for all the people of Florida by law. I do fear someone is going to get hurt someday though because homeowners do not provide public access.
I just happen to know of a lot of beaches people don't go to because there are no lifeguards. I go to those and just cool off in the water. Some of them are deep drop offs so there's no kids there. The one in the picture is absolutely gorgeous.

That's cool, I hope things work out... To deny people the enjoyment of the beach is simply criminal!

We live right up a private road (that we luckily get access to) from this beach, it's nice have a 2 minute walk... *sigh* your picture reminds me how cold it is here...

Well, a native, like you are, knows where all the best beaches are. When my cousin visited, she insisted on going to a beach with a lot of people. I hate it there. It started raining so we just piled into the car and drove 3 miles to this beach. It took their breath away, it's so beautiful. And you could look down the coastline and se the thunderstom at the other beach. They just love my secret beach. I know several of them.

I understand granting access to the beach, but I would hate having people tramping through my yard to get to it.

I just watched "City By the Sea" with Deniro. The title refers to Long Beach Long Island. Long Beach is in Nassau County. It`s a perfect example of how a state, county, city and it`s "residents" can turn beach front property into a garbage dump.

NYC is no better. Coney Island and the Rockaways are for the most part ****holes. Consider yourself lucky.

Beaches here can be privately owned. A lot of the houses on the east end of long island, specifically in the hamptons, come with their own private beach.

i have a couple "secret beaches" in Avalon, also. but during high season, even the tourists are spread out onto them. it's just too crowded on the Jersey beaches in summer. give me Spring and Fall down there anytime.

Well, when they buy or build houses, they know up front they have to provide beach acess. But I personally don't know of one house that has it. There is kind of an uneasy peace in that the city tries to provide as many acesses as they can. But every now and then there is a problem. The biggest problem is on the beaches that aren't used much. The homeowners kind of see the beaches as their own. Sometimes, people will just get fed up and use the side of their lawns to get to the beach.
When my son was little, it was a battle with the motels. I would drop my son off with other mothers and their kids and the only place to do it was at a motel parking lot. I used to regularly get into it with a motel manager because he said I used his pool and I didn't. But I did use the beach access to get to the beach. I finally shut him up when I told him to PROVE I used his pool (and I didn't) and that I knew what was really wrong was he didn't want me using access to the beach by the side of his pool. *heehee* I made it my only beach access after that! lol

I remember when i was a kid, we'd be sitting at the kitchen table at the shore house. It's not on the ocean, but on an inlet. We'd see a family with kids and floats in tow, walk thru our back yard and head down our dock to go swimming! that's when my dad finally put up a no trespassing sign. people are desperate to get to the water!

I bet litter is another issue that the property owners have to deal with on a regular basis.

It wouldn't do for me to live somewhere that I had to allow people to cross my property. I'm still looking for a good place to be a hermit.

Actually, the areas affected by it mostly are on the beaches not used on a regular basis. And that's because they have made them so hard to get to. Things will go fine for awhile then some beachgoers will get fed up with the *no tresspassing* signs or there is a confrontation and all hell breaks loose. I wouldn't live on the water, personally. But those that do seem to have a hard time understanding that, tecnically, people have every right to walk between houses if they do not show a designated beach access.
I've lived here almost 25 years so I basically know how to get to the beach fairly easily. The ones that get the most upset are those that don't regularly go to the beach or are weekend beachgoers.

That's beautiful, JB! I wish our weather would make up it's mind. One day I'm in shorts the next day, jeans. I'd love to live where you knew weather it was summer or winter for a month!
The beaches are growing in leaps and bounds here. Our house is 3 times what it was worth when we first bought it. It's just amazing.
