  • CMT's So-Called Top 100 Country Songs

Did anyone watch CMT's Top 100 Country Songs show? Boy, were they off the mark on some of those. "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is clearly the greatest country song of all time, hands down. "Stand By Your Man" is up there, but not No. 1. And only one song from the Statler Brothers in the Top 100? George Strait got shortchanged too. The Oak Ridge Boys got hosed also.

How come I didn't get to vote on this? I feel disenfranchised.

Those lists will never please everyone. Real traditionalists disregard a lot of newer stuff and vice versa.

How come I didn't get to vote on this?"

Because you didn't go to the CMT website and vote.

I think Toby Keith got screwed.....#82 and not even his best song.

Personally, I wouldn't pick either "Stand by....." or "He stopped....". Both are classics, but I don't view them as the all time best. I see several on the list I'd have ranked higher, including "The Devil Went Down to GA", "Friends in Low Places", "Ring of Fire" and "Take this Job and Shove it".

There are a few I was happy to see even make the list, like "Independence Day", but I can't figure out how "Breathe" ranked higher than "Delta Dawn", a true classic.

TOP 'country song'? I'm kinda partial to The Devil Went Down to Georgia, myself....but what do I know? I grew up in rural Alabama.....

I thought Lee Ann Rimes and Kimberly Locke sang Patsy Cline's songs way better than Patsy Cline ever could.

I guess I need to watch CMT more often, so I know to vote next time.

And how did the Dixie Sluts get #22, over stuff like "I Walk the Line"?

Most of you are probably too young to remember my all-time favorite - Born to Lose, by Ray Price. In some ways it reminds me of my life.

I didn't get to watch the show. I went to my granddaughter's dance recital. Sometimes I feel like I'm the victim of a conspiracy. I'm either doing nothing or have two things to do at the same time on opposite sides of town.

I think the Dixie Chickens shouldn't have made the list. Heck, if they had to be on it, they should have been lower. Tons of other songs that should have been rated higher than Wide open spaces.

I didn't see the show, I just checked the list off the website.

The thing is, nobody will ever agree on any sort of list like this. My wife is going to be ticked that Toby was only on there once and that he was toward the bottom.

This is sort of off topic but worth mentioning:

Speaking of the Dixie Chicks did any of you happen to watch the ACM awards? I just saw the rerun yesterday and every time the Chicks were up for an award they got boos from the crowd. Ouch! They are still feeling the wrath!

Missed it; did George Jones win anything? That is country music....not stuff by Shania Twain. I do like George Strait because he is a Texas boy and he looks good in his hat and boots

The Oak Ridge Boys and "Y'all Come Back Saloon" were not on the list? "Flowers on the Wall" by the Statler Brothers was not on the list? [Eek!]

Who made up this list? This is an outrage!!!

But seriously folks, those were two of the better country songs to come down the pipe. Can't believe the Oaks weren't recognized at all. Of course, if they had recognized them for *gag* Elvira, I would have never forgiven CMT. I'm an ORB fan from waaaaaay back and consider their first three mainstream albums (Y'all Come Back Saloon, Room Service, and The ORB Have Arrived) to be their very best. Then along came Elvira and they hit "mega" star status, but the music faded after that.

Big points also for their Christmas albums!

Lifetime achievement award. Got a long standing ovation when he got it.

I thought it was even better when Reba was introducing Penn and Teller and said "which one of the two should the Dixie Chicks take a lesson from?" Wow!

Speaking of Reba, what was with the outfits? I don't remember Reba being that busty. [Eek!]

Then at the end, when Vince Gill was naming the Entertainer of the Year nominees, he covered his mouth when he said "Dixie Chicks." And everyone booed.
