  • a ghost in the smoke alarms?

The strangest thing just happened: both of the smoke detectors in my house went off simultaneously (during nap time for my son -- grr!).

Anyway, there is no smoke -- no fires and I'm not even cooking (though if I were that could definitely do it!).

Also put brand-new batteries in, but the detectors are still going off. Anyone have a clue what's going on? (BTW, sorry for the lame topic!).

How long ago did it happen? Could you have a wiring problem that is causing a smouldering fire inside the walls? Seems strange they both went off at the same time.

Just a few minutes ago -- I did a pretty thorough check of the house and couldn't find anything. I also couldn't smell anything. Though, opening a few windows does seem to have "fixed" the problem.

Yeah, it is strange that they went off at the same time, especially since they are on different floors.

But, the "inside the wall" thing is a possibility -- I'll do anohter walk-thru.

        thanks!

Well, just did another walk-thru (touching all the walls, sniffing, looking) and still couldn't detect any problems.

Scratchy: no, these are strictly smoke detectors -- I have a separate CO detector.

Well, just one of those things I guess (or maybe there really are smoke people ).

It's strange that they both went off at the same time, but don't leave out the possibilty of spiders and dust. It could have been a coincidence, or are your smoke alarms hardwired together?

Yeah, I think dust is probably the most likely explanation. I did have a dusty storage room open longer today than I normally do (though not THAT much longer). And, after examining the air filters, they do appear to be in need of changing (which I'm fixin to do right now).

Hopefully that will fix it. I mentioned earlier that openning a few windows "solved" the problem, but I spoke too soon -- the [email protected] things started wailing again shortly after I wrote that. Right now I've got them unplugged and sitting on the counter.
