  • Someone was watching over me

Right now I am sooo thankful that I am even here typing this.

I swear I almost died this last Friday night. I was leaving for the coast with Dean (that's not the point -- we aren't living together) and daughter. We left late Friday night after I got off work around 10pm. I told him to drive because I was tired so we began our drive down this two lane hiway out in the boonies and at about 1230 that night, we slammed into a horse going about 55 mph; which was the posted speed limit by the way. I don't remember a whole lot as the the horse landed on the passenger side of the car and crushed the roof down close to my head. Glass from the windshield shattered everywhere and I was covered in blood when the car stopped. I know the worst thing to do is panic but there was so much debris and smoke that I couldn't tell if the car was on fire and I just started screaming "Get Kayla out of the car right now!" I was so glad she was crying that is how I knew she was ok. As I was getting out the driver's side door, I just saw people running over, I didn't know who they were and I was confused and they kept asking me if I was ok and I said "I don't know." They told me to sit down but all I kept hearing is people saying "God, she's lucky." So then I called Dean over there to take me to look at the car, cause I wanted to see what they were talking about; and I couldn't believe it. The whole passenger side was almost all the way crushed in! So when I get to the hospital that is all I could think about; that picture of my car and wondering how I didn't die. I checked out pretty well though, no major injuries. Just cuts from the windshield and bruises from the seatbelt and a nice big bump on my head. My daughter checked out fine and so did Dean. By the way there was no alcohol involved. It was just a lonely two way hiway with no lights and a horse that wandered out of his stable which by the way the deputy told us that there is a no grazing law in Oregon which makes the owner of the horse responsible for the accident -- thank goodness.

    Just happy to be alive.

Glad to hear that your still with us. I know it is pretty interesting to look at a vehicle after a accident and you yourself wonder how the heck did I walk away from that? I know live stock in the middle of a reaod is a real hazard and a very dangerous thing to run across. Just be glad it was not a 1400lb cow that you hit. The results would have been much different.

Once again very glad that you and yours are ok.

You ARE lucky Autumn. Went to an accident one time where a pickup hit a horse. Knocked the horse into the cab of the truck, right through the windshield. The terrified (and mortally injured) horse repeatedly kicked the driver and passenger. One of them (can't remember which one now) died en route to the hospital.

IMHO I'd RATHER hit a cow, than a horse or an elk!

We have a LOT of deer hit in this area. And elk. And antelope!

Late yesterday afternoon I looked outside and saw a six point bull elk croping the grass in my front yard. About five feet from the front deck.

I agree Bill. And, I will bet that (unlike SOME folks) you have enough energy to hunt them legally, instead of waiting for them to cross the road, then running them down!

You were very lucky, AA. I have a friend that had major eye injuries from a horse that spooked and kicked his side mirror into his drivers side window as he slowly passed it.
I am so glad you are all ok. I gather the horse did not survive, which is sad, but at least all of you are ok.
