What should I get him for his birthday? He is in his late 20's....

I don't want to give him something so common like a neck-tie or a pen...

It really depends on what type of friend. I would get a lady friend something completely different then a "girlfriend". An all around great gift would be some kind of magazine subscription. Try to think of the things that mean the most to him or something that he like

If he's a sports fan, tickets to his fave sporting event are always a good gift, or a piece of sporting equipment. Dinner and a movie are nice, as is going into the city and finding something that interests him. Or you just go with the usual blah stuff: cologne, magazine subscription, etc.
