At our detachment (15 Police officers,4 per shift + the odd auxiliary) the people comming off shift usually sit down and talk things over with thier relief. The shifts don't end for everyone at the same time. People get off shift at two hour intervals so formal breafings are only done before team operations, search&rescue, search warrants, ect.

We used to have briefings before every shift for about 25 minutes. We'd talk about who got arrested, who the burglary suspects are, who the crazy people are (threats to officer safety), ect...

Currently, our patrol guys have briefing once a week, on Fridays only. On the other days, they log-on from the terminals in their cars and they go on-duty from their driveways. While this is a great convenience, it reduces the flow of communication between those going off-shift with those going on-duty.
