  • Interesting pursuit in my neighborhood RIGHT NOW!

I DO NOT listen to a scanner at home...but my folks do. They just called to inform me that Sheriff's deputies and THP units had '10-46'd'(accident w/injuries) down the road. They are currently chasing a guy through the woods wanted after assaulting 3 officers on a traffic stop, then fleeing.

Nothing like that EVER happens when I work....

And NO....I'm not allowed to assist. [Frown]

You cant assist ? Why not ? Whats up with that ?

If something like that went down around here and a reserve or partimer was close by and he didnt respond and the fulltimers found out about it, he would be chastised for months to come.

Here, you just check in 10-8 and are good to go.

It's out of my jurisdiction. The Mayor would have my chief's *** for it. If the Mayor found out I take a car out of the county, he'd have MINE. Heck...even INSIDE my county, city officers can't backup SO units(outside city limits) unless formally requested to do so by the SO.

That does not make for a good "working" relationship with other agencies.
When we back up or "get involved" with another agency it's also frowned upon but, I'm NOT going to drive by a one officer m/v stop, mva, or something in progress. I'll stay until his back up arrives.

Two of our guys were stopped at a traffic light in a marked unit as they were enroute to a suspect's residence and "technically" out of their jurisdiction.
Well, the building to their left literally blew up / caught fire due to a gas explosion. People inside screaming, etc. They went in pulled one guy out, who later died from injuries from the blast, and assisted with other issues. These officers sustained burns to the arms and hands during their efforts.
ANYWAY, they got their butts reamed out by the brass for "getting involved." I guess they were expected to make believe they didn't see it and keep driving once the light changed.

                    Wow.

Thats too bad. Sometimes the policy makers forget what the original intent is.

Its a fact that most people around here wont distinguish between who is who when it comes to police forces. You cant imagine how many times we'be been reffered to as the state police, just because we wear the campaign hats. Even though theirs are light gray and ours are black.

The county backs all of the smaller city depts. here and vice versa if they are close by. Many times there will be one small town cop on duty and one deputy on duty and maybe one state police, and every body pretty well works together. About the only thing we dont do is enforce traffic in a small town without being asked. If I am in the big city(25,000) here I wont mess with much unless it happens in front of me or if specifically requested. On a wreck, if we are the first there, we'll stick around and turn it over to the parent agency when they get there.

Overall, I'd say its a pretty good working environment. Nobody gets upset about stopping anybody for any reason. Since we are all state certified, we dont get into "juristiction" battles much at all. Our only understanding is no matter where one is at, if we witness a felony act then we are expected to deal with it and inform the residing dept. when possible. If a call goes out and you know that officer is short handed you are expected to assist if you are not busy. Its understood by all and it works well.Just the other day we had 4 agencies respond to a house with a known dangerous felon in it. They got him out,4 different officers instad of just one, it made it much safer. When it was over, everone just thanked each other and visited awhile. I suppose there are some advantages to living in a small town.
