Alaska Airlines have announced plans to make modifications to their aircraft cockpit doors. First modification is to line the cockpit side of the door with kevlar panels.
Second, is to place kick proof grills on the passenger side of the door. The grill is able to withstand 1,500 pounds of pressure. Third, is the instalation of two 1 1/4 bullet proof windows in the cockpit door, to allow pilots to view the passenger cabin. Also, in the works is a new cockpit door handle and new locking device from inside the cockpit. The estimated cost is to be $1.2 million. Alaska Airlines pilots union also backs legislation to allow pilots to be armed.
