  • Cop Killer Accepts Plea

A.K.A. Dirtbag gets choice his victim never had.

Jason was a great Deputy who died protecting his community. I am thankful his family won't have to endure our legal system.

Shannon pleads guilty in deputy's death

    Staff Report

    February 18, 2003

Michael Shannon pleaded guilty this morning to the murder of Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Baker.

The plea deal carries a sentence of life without parole. The trial for Shannon, 21, was supposed to begin today. He faced the death penalty if convicted.

Baker's family supported the agreement because it spares them the emotional agony of years of appeals by Shannon.

"This isn't about closure," said Jerry Baker, Jason's father. "It's about moving forward."

Shannon admitted to killing the 24-year-old deputy during a car chase and gunbattle on Sept. 17, 2001.

Shannon was riding with three other men that night when Baker tried to pull the car over.

The car took off, and soon gunfire erupted from the mens' Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

At one point, after the car drove onto Brouse Avenue, Baker turned into the line of fire and was shot.

The Monte Carlo, driven by Allen Dumperth, crashed into the back of a house on North Baltimore Avenue. Police were fired upon by Dumperth, who had fled the car and was hiding in a wooded area. Police killed him after he reportedly pointed a weapon at them.

Shannon was later arrested after a local resident tried to drive him out of the area.

Charges against the other two passengers were dropped. Prosecutors said neither man was directly involved in Baker’s shooting.

Baker had been on the force for two years when he was gunned down.
