A Suffolk County Police Highway Patrol Officer was hit by a drugged driver while monitoring traffic on the Long Island Expressway Wednesday, police said. The driver fled the scene, but was arrested a short distance away.
Police Officer Matthew Decoteau was monitoring westbound traffic from his patrol car, which was parked in the center median just west of Nicholls Road in Holtsville, at about 7:09 p.m. when a vehicle allegedly drifted off the road and hit the rear of the patrol car. The vehicle, a 1991 Ford van, driven by Robert Scimeca, 36, of Slabey Avenue was travelling eastbound in the HOV lane.
The accident was witnessed by Detective Robert Petro who followed the van when it fled and stopped Scimeca.
Decoteau was taken to the University Medical Center at Stony Brook where he was treated for a neck injury.
Scimeca was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated by drugs, leaving the scene of an accident and with criminal possession of a hypodermic needle. He is scheduled to be arraigned today in First District Court in Central Islip.
