  • Trip to Florida

I would welcome any (nice) suggestions for places to visit on the coast of Florida. I fly to Orlando but can go anywhere. I just want to veg on a beach and perhaps see some nice sites when I overdo the sunbathing.

Whatever you do, bring sunscreen. I see so many sunburned tourists. My own cousin had to go to the emergency room because of a bad sunburn. I kept telling her to put on the sunscreen often but the sun and the beach and the breeze and seagulls can lull you into sleep, something you DON'T want to do on the beach. I've lived here all my life and never go out without my sunscreen. The beaches on the coast are so beautiful. Just use your common sense....and sunscreen!

Definetly go to the Space Centre on cape. It's well worth it.

I went a few years ago, and if I can remember correctly it's about an 1.5 drive from Orlando. And it's about $20 for the 1 package. You get all sorts of stuff included. You go on a guided tour of the lunch facilities, an Imax type show, a short movie, and there are so many things to see in the different muesums there. I spent about 8 hours with that tour. I think the next tour package is about $5-10 more. Theres a website were I'm sure hey get into better detail.

      But definetly worth a visit.

Also their are some great gator farms around Orlando.

If your into airplanes at all, there is a great amusment park, "not a museum" as the owner says, in Polk City. The Website is www.fantasyofflight.com
They have 6 or 7 simulators where you can dog fight other poeple. Me being the avid avitor thought I would walk out with a trophy [Wink] . I came in dead last, and walked out with my tail between my legs [Eek!] . I think a 7 year old came in first place. There are so many cool things there. But I'm an airplane nut, so I'm a little biased...

There is alot to do around Orlando.

Did I mention this little Theme Park in Orlando, I can't remember the name of it, but I think it has to do with mice, or something like that?!?

Fort Lauderdale. Go on the "Jungle Cruise". It's great. Also, if you have a hundred dollars or so, go on the cruise to the Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale. It's a day trip and the cruise ship has a casino on it and a nice dining room. It's a mini version of a full size cruise ship. When you get to the Bahamas you will be let off the ship, you go through their customs (which isn't much..they just look you over)and then get on a bus to the tourist area. There, you can gamble in the casinos, eat in many restaurants, go scuba diving, fishing, swimming, shopping...You leave around 6 am and arrive back sometime after dark.

        Well worth the money!

ps. Don't buy too much...you'll get nabbed by U.S Customs on the way back.

For quiet, less crowded beaches, you might want to look into the Sarasota/Ft. Myers/Naples area.

Thanks for the ideas, please keep them coming for at least another day. In a guide book St Augustine looked nice and interesting, has anyone been there.
            Cheers.

If you're going to do an Airboat, go to the Everglades.

St. Augustine is ok. It sounds like there is a lot to do, but in reality, it's a day.

My husband and I love Sanibel/Captiva Islands, near Fort Myers. Wonderful shelling on the beaches... great bird reserve, where you can bike, drive, or canoe... great restaurants and neat little shops... shell museum. There's also theater, galleries, etc. It's also close to the Everglades, we took a day trip there, and an airboat ride which was great fun.

                  Silver Springs is nice, too.

DEf. Naples is paradise.. Gulf is warmer, and overall, nicer if water & lots of sun is your thing.

                        I'm still sick of Florida.

I'm sorry, but no state should be so large that you can't get out of it after 12 hours of driving at 90. It ought to be in the Constitution...*SHUDDER* [Wink]
