Excellent Book - (G***A, check it out)
"Newjack" by Ted Conover. This guy wanted to do a documentary on the NY state prison system from inside the prisons of the state: Attica, Sing Sing, Eastern, etc. He was completely banned. They never let him in, and they never gave a reason as to why he wouldn't be allowed to document.
Most people would find something else to write about. Mr Conover? Nuh-uh. He goes and becomes a NYS Corrections Officer for a year, quits, then writes his book. Excellent, excellent book. Very intriguing. Goes from before his academy experience all the way through his short "career".
