My name is Jade Pusey. This is my wife, Tanya, and my son, Garrett. I am a 30 year old police officer. On March 17 th , 2003, I underwent surgery to remove a large, cancerous tumor. During the operation it was discovered that there were dozens of tumors, ranging in size from a large cantaloupe to microscopic size. The surgeon removed as many as he could and the rest were left inside my body.
On March 19 th , 2003, my wife and I were told that the doctors believed I would not live. On April 2 nd , 2003, they diagnosed me with Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumors, an extremely rare form of cancer. The bad news is that only a few people have lived for more than a year after diagnosis; the good news is they have learned enough about similar cancers that doctors believe there may be a treatment that might cure the cancer and save my life.
The plan involves several more rounds of chemotherapy, followed by another surgery, and a stem cell harvest. I will then be admitted to the hospital for a lethal dose of chemotherapy, followed by a stem cell transplant, utilizing my own harvested stem cells and the stem cells of a donor. We are fortunate in that my brother is a match for this transplant. The risks are great. I will be in the hospital for at least a month, and depending on the outcome perhaps for many months or even a year. Any infection during this time could prove fatal. We are willing to undertake these risks because the doctors tell me it is the only chance I have to live.
Our insurance plan has denied coverage for the procedure which the doctors believe may save my life. The doctors will not be able to begin this very difficult, expensive procedure until they have the money in hand--$ 200,000. We have tried hard to be thrifty, to save, to carry insurance for just this type of event, but with the insurance company refusing to cover my treatment, we must look to others to help us cover the costs. I know economic times are tough right now; I know many families are struggling to make ends meet. Anything you feel you could do to help me and my family is appreciated more than I can express. Thank you, and God bless you and your family, as He has blessed my family.
