  • Klar, the Naval Engineer

Is there someone on those huge aircraft carriers whose job it is, to make sure the ship stays balanced?

I know why a standard ship design will result in a ship that will float. But how is it possible that an aircraft carrier can stay balanced?

These questions I submit to you, because I know of your secret PH.D in such engineer concepts

LOL While I am not that good at civil, industrial or naval engineering I will try to give you a plausible answer. IF how ever I am wrong then I am wrong. LOL most ships stay afloat as you know by the displacement of more water than their weight. To keep the water in proper balance most ships have a spot for everything so I would presume that the lower decks that hold aircraft on a aircraft carrier would have a designated spot for every plane on it. I know there is a reason that they launch two birds (planes) at a time so that might have something to do with maintaining balance but I really think the aircraft carrier can maintain balance with a odd number of planes on it. I believe most large ships like that of a aircraft carrier, battleship, curise ship have additional stablizers that they use to keep the balance on it such to minimize the efects of the waves upon such a large vessel.

I hope this has helped you to understand a little more in this. IF any naval vets or current naval members can help here to fine tune where I am wrong it would be appriciated LOL

Just so you all know I do not profess to know everything but I do have a lot of knowledge LOL Spelling still befuddles me though LOL

Klar, the one question I have never had to ask, because I know the answer, is what causes the wind.

Wind is caused by the movement of the branches of the trees and bushes. This is easy to prove, in that a person needs only to observe the trees and bushes on a windy day. When the trees and bushes are still, there is no wind detectable.

Finally, most airports landing strips are built in alignment with trees and bushes somewhere at the end of the lanes. Aircraft will take off into the wind, that is, they take off in the direction of the trees and bushes which are waving back and forth.

      Army aviators taught me this.

LOL wind is a natural thing but not caused by trees. It is a result of uneven warming and cooling of the land verses a body of water. That is why it is windy most times where a large body of water and land come together. It is also why it gets windy at the approach of a thunderstorm. The land under the thunderstorm is rapidly colled by the rain and thus the warmer air around it rushes in thus causing the thunderstorm to get more energy and become a much greater storm. This is how a lot of thunderstorms will be caused to train (one right after another) in very favorable conditions (high temps and humidity).

          Ok..I'll bite on this one..

Large ships have tanks or holds with water, oil, gas or whatever in side the skin of the ship that will be pumped from one side to the other to maintain balance. When I was on an aircraft carrier many years ago, it was the responsiblity of the chief engineer or his designee to watch the bubble level in
Central Control. If it deviated a degree or so ethier way it was up to him to maintain level. When you are moving equipment like planes or taking on fuel, this was a fulltime job. Shooting off two planes at a time off the cats was only to expedite launching of planes, it had nothing to do with balance.

          As for the wind...

everyone knows that all wind in the US comes travels to Oklahoma...because of some anomoly of nature has a negative air pressure, also known as a vacuum. You will notice on the evening news that ALL storms coming from the West coast travel east towards OK. and all storms form the East Coast travel west towards OK.

I know that this is so because this was taught to me by Naval Aviators, the best pilots in the world...

LOL thanks watchman I knew the navy had some means of using a type of stabilizer but just did not exactly what it was. You helped me out greatly there thanks LOL

              Klar,

Is there "something" going on between you and Jim? He's been complimenting you a lot lately.... LOL.... When I was a young girl, we used to ask the boys we liked these kinds of questions...(Jim, don't kill me, please..) .... I'm just making an observation.

                    Klar,

Sure your idea of the earth warming and cooling which causes wind sounds logical but, still the facts are there for all to see:

Just immediately prior to the thunderstorm you will note the branches are lay still. Just as the storm breaks, the trees begin to shake and wave (don't they?) thus, even the unschooled, can see the proof.

Army aviators are Superior Beings, and would never lie to a Military Police NCO.

Naval aviators are suspect, why else would they need to fly above a soft, watery surface?

And Fast 1: Klar has time to ponder these weighty questions as he stirs the soup, so I submit my toughest questions for his consideration.

Except for the wind thing, I know that one.

But Klar, Army Aviators wear cool shades, nifty scarves and reduce targets to scrap with chain guns, all before brunch. How could such higher mortals lie?

There is something good about spending the day in the Mojave, with a good team and some MRE. MP don't need no stinking martini!

That's for them naval guys. Uh, Klar, why do they insist on calling themselves after a belly button?

Is that sailor talk for some on-board perversion?
