UN panel raps US record on torture

GENEVA – Police brutality, military interrogations and prisons were among the top concerns of a U.N. panel's report Friday that found the United States to be falling short of full compliance with an international anti-torture treaty.

The report by the U.N. Committee Against Torture, its first such review of the U.S. record since 2006, expressed concerns about allegations of police brutality and excessive use of force by law enforcement officials, particularly the Chicago Police Department's treatment of blacks and Latinos. It also called for restricting the use of taser weapons by police to life-threatening situations. But it had no specific recommendation or reaction to a grand jury's decision not to indict the white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri who fatally shot a black and unarmed teenager.

The report also criticizes the U.S. record on military interrogations, maximum security prisons, illegal migrants and solitary confinement while calling for tougher federal laws to define and outlaw torture, including with detainees at Guantanamo Bay and in Yemen. It also called for abolishing interrogation techniques that rely on sleep or sensory deprivation "aimed at prolonging the sense of capture."

"There are numerous areas in which certain things should be changed for the United States to comply fully with the convention," Alessio Bruni of Italy, one of the panel's chief investigators, said at a news conference Friday in Geneva. He was referring to the U.N. Convention Against Torture, which took effect in 1987 and the United States ratified in 1994.

The U.N. committee's 10 independent experts are responsible for reviewing the records of all 156 U.N. member countries that have ratified the treaty against torture and all "cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment."
I want to say to the UN:

    1) Until you start going after countries like Iran and Pakistan, who are executing women for resisting rapists, North Korea for basically being 1984 embodied, Putin for inciting unrest in Ukraine, and China for giving pretty much no human rights to speak of, your opinions on U.S. law enforcement don't mean SQUAT!

As i normally say when they try to condemn anything here, and Hopefully when we get a real leader in office.

Pull our support and funding from that bunch of fools and ignore them like every other country in the world does.

They are willing to go after the USA because they think our dear leader will capitulate.
I am concerned for the security of our great Nation; not so much because of any threat from without, but because of the insidious forces working from within.

It's ironic hearing Russia lecture us about civil rights.
        Let Assange and Snowden off?
Maybe they need to look at themselves first.

The UN has no clue what a normal every day police force or officer does. All they see is the crap on CNN which tells one side of the story.

As for our prisons, yes they are hard places and should be.

          3 meals a day
dental ( for those who have any teeth )
          color TV
and now they are getting air conditioning.

Hell the majority of all inmates dont have any of that in the free world to begin with. We should make prison with the same restrictions most have in the freeworld.

Eat once a day if they wake up,no insurance because they dont work,no TV unless they go to someone elses house ( cell ) because they dont pay the electric bills because again they dont work mostly and use what they get on drugs or booze, and no air conditioning, hell most live with the windows open all the time anyway.

Being inside prisons all the time i would love to see them go back to how they used to be.

Look at what countries run these UN bodies, and you'll see why it's such a sham.

UN should change its acronym to WBB, as in "World's Biggest Busybody".
It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

Yea, we can do better.... But we are small potatoes compared to North Korea! The average North Korean is like 6 inches shorter than EVERYONE else due to their own governments mass starvation of its citizens. Perhaps they should focus on NK. Once they are free, or at least Like China, then they can look at us.

Bear in mind we are talking about the same hypocrites that set up the oil for food scam that enabled Saddam to build his military into the threat that it was, while starving his citizens. The only thing the US can learn from them is how to be a clusterf*ck of useless incompetents and we have enough home grown examples. Time to cut the funding and show them the door. I think they wore out their welcome here.

UN= Useless Nations. Want to solve a part of the homeless problem in New York City? Want to develop some nice high rise apartments? Kick the Chablis sipping, hypocritical, finger pointing butt holes out of there, and start the remodeling.
