  • Roadkill for dinner

Last night there was a deer involved in an accident and guess who got it???

After properly dressing it, I got about 25-30 lbs of good meat off him (it was a small deer). MMMMMM I can't wait.

Crazy for the Preservation of Bambi,

Where did you think meat comes from?

One night many moons ago, we had a deer get hit and killed. After a quick call to a local game warden, the freshly killed deer ( and I do mean fresh ) was on his way to be processed. Made some real good eats at the next beer party.

I have seen possum roadkill picked up by some of our locals for dinner. One old drunk I arrested had a possum head in his coat pocket that he had been nawing on every now and then for a quick snack. That was a bit much for me. But this drunk also picked up cigarette butts and smoked them. He was really nasty person and I only arrested him if I absolutely, positively, sergeant ordered me to.

Jim, you seem to think I'm in opposition to someone hunting deer, or putting to good use road-kill. Actually, I'm just expressing my amazement in the similarities of culbyak's incident to mine.

Did you read my DAMN DEER thread?

My error! Having read your other posts, 'Damn Deer', I can see you actually hate deer.

              So, I stand corrected!

I wish a possum road kill person would drive through my back yard some night. At least I think that's what is out there. I have to shut my little chihuahua in the house after dark to protect him. Then I have to take him out there a couple of times before I go to bed. I put him on a leash so I can pull him in quickly if necessary. Everybody tells me possums are killers.

                  C in a J------

I didn't really get it at first, but after you reminded me of the previous threat it makes a little more sense.

I never heard that. Then again I've never had a dog smaller than a possum. Seriously, the possums are going to kill your dog?

Bill, that's what people keep telling me. I don't know much about wild animals.

I really think a dog could outrun a possum. The ones I've seen, that usually end up flat, don't really move that fast.

Well Ive got to admit that one had me rollin !

I go through at least one possum a month.

Ive got a Basset hound that takes it personal when they eat out of his dish. The other day he jumped a possum about 3 times bigger than he was. By the time I put my britches on and loaded a .22 that possum was already sulled up (playin dead for you cityslickers).

I will admit they can act pretty mean with those big teeth and all but usually their bark is way worse than their bite.

As for being killers...I doubt it. Possums are so dadgummed slow that if they did kill a dog it probably deserved it. [Eek!]

Snoopy, I wouldn't worry too much about possums doing much more than getting into your trash cans. Coyotes OTOH are a serious problem in many areas in SoCal. They will range quite a ways into developed areas.

My female Yorkie got one cornered one nite at 3 am. She got me up and I thought she had to go outside but she went after this possum so fast. I know I woke the whole neighborhood up screaming at her but she wouldn't back off. And this possum was NOT in a good mood. Luckily, she backed him up against a tree and he climbed it and sat there on the fence. I swore he was giving her the finger. He was one ****ed off possum but not half as ****ed as I was at my dog. She knew I was mad and I had to open the door and chase her around the pool to get her in the house where she ran under the bed. My husband slept through the whole thing and still doesn't believe me. But now, she goes out back leashed and she's not too happy about that. grrrr
