Detroit police on security detail must salute the mayor
    By Associated Press, 9/6/2002 13:48

DETROIT (AP) Police officers assigned to the mayor's security detail better not forget to salute or they could face disciplinary action.

A memo from 6th Precinct Inspector Oscar Dixon says that effective immediately ''all members assigned to the security detail at the mayor's residence, upon seeing Mayor (Kwame) Kilpatrick exit his home or vehicle shall get out of their patrol vehicle with your hat on and render a hand salute.''

Those who fail to salute, it says, ''will be subject to disciplinary action.'' The memo doesn't say what the discipline could be.

Mayoral spokesman Jamaine Dickens said Kilpatrick noticed that more officers had been saluting lately. But Dickens said the mayor didn't know what was behind it.

Sgt. Ricardo Moore, a police spokesman, said it is normal procedure for officers in an organization like the police department to salute the boss.

''It may sound funny to some people. However, that is our protocol,'' Moore told the Detroit Free Press for a story Friday.

Frank, you actually have to salute your mayor?

Do you also have to thank him for the Tigers and Lions?

The mayor should be saluting them.

This is the same mayor and chief who allegedly apologized to the people in a neighborhood who were subjected to directed patrol tactics after a police officer was executed while breaking up a gambling party in the street.

Ambition is a dangerous thing. I think he should dispense with the half-way measures and just demand that everyone kiss his ***. It would, at least, be more honest.

Did I just see someone climbing through the Mayor's window? Naaaah! Must've been my imagination.

That's rediculous. Get out of your car and then salute. The military doesn't even have to do that. The freaking mayor... who the F does he think he is anyway?

When you have to demand respect from the people who work for you, you have obviously failed as a leader. Apparently the *mayor fails to realize this. All he is doing is proving that he can not, and does not have the ability to lead.

*The word mayor in this post was not capatilzed intentionally. I didn't want the mayor of Detroit to read this and get an even bigger head.

I live in the metro detroit area and I know that kilpatrick has bigger problems like being 2.1 million dollars over on the new water billing system.

Detroit has one of the worst reputations around and kilpatrick needs to start concerning himself with more important things!!!
