A friend just told me she heard that Carroll O'Connor died of a heart attack a couple of hours ago. At least he's finally with his son.

I remember watching the show as a kid. It was funny, but I didn't really "get it". I just laughed when he called Mike a meathead or Edith a dingbat!
Watching the reruns on TV Land as an adult, I realize that Archie Bunker may have been IGNORANT, but he wasn't always WRONG!
R.I.P. Chief Gillespie!

Here is Archie's song:
Boy, the way Glen Miller played.
Songs that made the hit parade.
Guys like us, we had it made.
Those were the days.
Didn't need no welfare state.
Everybody pulled his weight.
Gee, our old LaSalle ran great.
Those were the days.
And you know who you were then,
girls were girls and men were men.
Mister, we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again.
People seemed to be content.
Fifty dollars paid the rent.
Freaks were in a circus tent.
Those were the days.
Take a little Sunday spin,
go to watch the Dodgers win.
Have yourself a dandy day that cost you under a fin.
Hair was short and skirts were long.
Kate Smith really sold a song.
I don't know just what went wrong.
Those Were The Days.

Thanks Mitzi, I think Archie had it wrong and meathead was wrong too. For instance Archie thought all blacks were bad but Lionel his neighbor was an exception. Meatheat thought they all were good. But the truth is you have to judge each one as an individual and race should not be a part of it. So I see it as a good learning tool and no one should take offense. Archie hated everyone eventually.

My favorite lines:
"Stifle yourself, Edith!"
"Get da hell outta my chair!!!"
and the all time winner:
"Let me tell you something, Mr. Bunker....."
"No; let me tell you something, Mr. Stivic- you are a meathead!"
But you have to admit, he made a great transition from New York City bigot to a small town Mississippi police chief.
"Calm down, Bubba!"
and with that thick Southern accent, I swear he always called Parker "Parka"(like a thick winter coat).Never make a drummer mad- we beat things for a living!
