    London School Reduces Lunch Stigmas
    By Associated Press

    January 8, 2003, 4:31 PM EST

LONDON -- A new high school said Wednesday its students will be charged for their lunches with a retina scanning device to prevent poor children who eat for free from being ridiculed in the cafeteria.

Dr. Ed Yates, headmaster of the Venerable Bede school, said the advanced eye-recognition software will be in place when the institution opens its doors to 900 students in September in Sunderland, western England.

He said the school is concerned that if students are forced to pay for their lunches in cash the poor ones who receive food for free could be stigmatized. So officials have decided to make the entire school "cashless."

The retina scanning device also will be used in the library when students take out and return books, Yates said.

He assured parents the low-intensity light of the retina scanning devices will be safe for all students.

"We think we are the first (school) in the country to use this," he said of the device. "But this is not a James Bond school for spies. ... This is not science fiction. This is technology that exists."

What ever happened to signing your name? How about swiping a school id card? How about preselling lunch tickets?

If a school in my area got something like this, I would be livid. This is going overboard at the expense of the taxpayer.

Well, you gotta think also, this could be a private school.

Me, I think it's a bit much. I'd be interested in seeing the cost of implementing this system.

It wouldn't surprise me to find out the school is getting the technology for FREE...and the company gets the EXPOSURE.

Ya.. I could see that happening especially since this is the first school to be doing this.

I remember hearing, a couple of years ago, about a bank in TEXAS that was using retinal scans for customer account access at ATMs. At the time, I couldn't help but wonder if the reports of people having their eyeballs plucked out by BGs would start pouring in......

Ridiculous! Where my daughter goes to school, they get a card with a magnetic stripe for lunch. No buying a lunch ticket, just keep your account up to date, and even if your account balance falls to zero, you can still eat, just pay what is charged against your account. And whether the ticket is full fare, half price, or free, it's your own business. Saves a lot of time and hassle.
Before anyone scoffs at a kid eating free in a school cafeteria, they'd better stop and realize they are getting a free ride from taxpayers, too. If is wasn't for funds from the government, that lunch they eat could cost 3 to 4 times the amount they are paying now! I don't know if that applies to private schools, because I attended public school all the way through.

Cripes, I'd rather my tax dollars go to educate and feed a kid, rather than be wasted by the government on some of their harebrained projects!

Yall better get used to it, its here to stay.

They are using it on kids because kids have no qualms about using it. Soon, they'll grow up and think nothing of doing it for every aspect of their lives and they will think its quite natural.

Watchman, I wonder what you would've done if they'd just now developed finger-printing technology ... "Quick! Skin your fingers!"

As Hitler's SS proved, children make excellent tools, informants, weapons, spies....

FWIW, kids in my school are all assigned a # that they enter into the computer at each meal. If they eat FREE, they pay nothing(unless they buy extras, frill foods, etc). Kids that DON'T eat FREE LUNCH also punch in a #, and pay daily, weekly or for frill foods. NO ONE knows WHO pays, eats FREE, etc, since at any given time, ANYone could be forking over $$$ at the register......

One of these days you'll have to have a retina scan just to use the ****er at a gas station. [Eek!]

Watchman, I didn't say I disagreed with you, I just wondered what your reaction would be had finger printing technology only been recently developed.

And you know, there's another saying, "if you don't see handwriting on the wall, the guy telling you about it is paranoid."

Perhaps. Since we are talking about installing them at work already in place of hand scanners, perhaps I'm not so "paranoid " after all eh ?

I don't know, Watchman. I think you'd have to convince me that it's a nefarious scheme by the government to keep tabs on everyone first.
