  • Bad experiences with 'Subway'?

My daughter came home from college last week complaining about the local Subway franchise near her college's campus. She and her boyfriend went in and ordered a 12-inch sub and 2 drinks. Price? $16!

My daughter inquired about the price variation from what was posted over the counter. Answer from a Subway employee? 'Since college is back in session, our prices have gone up.'

I have e-mailed Subway's web site 3 times over the past several days and have received ZERO response from the corporate level.

    Anyone else with similar experiences?

the blimpie's by my school has a lunch specials. the one i usually get costs 5.50, pretty decent considering its in manhattan.

however, i was forced to pay 8.00 for a 3 subject spiral notebook from DUANE READE.

That's ridiculous.....what'd they get, quadruple meat? The sub must have been 11 or 12 dollars. That sounds suspiciously like some serious price gouging on the part of the franchise operator (and I believe most all Subways are franchised). Georgia has a Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs which investigates price gouging. If Tennessee has something similar, I'd call 'em.

I take it you don't live in a college town? [Wink]

I live in a college town and (aptly enough) went to school in a different college town. It's not tooooo bad here in Fort Collins, but in Greeley, it's awful. The stores near campus have very very high prices, because they know they can get away with it.

It's very common, from what I've seen.

I used to work for Subway ... if its a franchise, I don't think the corporation has any say in whats going on. I can't imagine those prices are good for anything more then short term business, and since I actually work for my money (and that $16 would be an hours pay at Papa John's with good tips), they wouldn't get my business.

Of course, if they got a triple meat combo ...

I like Subway, I have to admit I didn't always like them. I usually get the veggie sub or something with chicken! Burger Kings are what's crappy here. They must be all owned by the same person!

The Subways close to EKU's campus in Richmond and UK's campus in Lexington have never charged more than usual when school is in session. We even get coupon books with 2 for 1 deals from them at the beginning of each semester.

I'd tell her to write a letter to the editor of the school paper and get it printed, everyone should boycott the place.

Ok, here's a similair story, a couple of weeks ago I was driving down a fairly low traffic highway, I stopped in for a pack of smokes (I know, bad habit). When the clerk rang them up the total was $4.85 for one pack! I automatically asked why they were so high. She tells me that they are the only store within thirty miles! I said thanks but no thanks and just didn't smoke for the next thirty miles.

If my sub came to sixteen bones, I would have said thanks but no thanks, and walked out!

I remember that Subway... had dinner there many a time before heading to the Dog or Tazwell's. Heh.

One more thing, I dont know squat about Subway's franchise agreements, but I believe the stores have to operate off of a standard menu and pricing schedule for their area. Sounds like the location your daughter was at may have violated their licensing agreement with Subway. I could be wrong, but that's my take on the situation.

I believe that a lot of campus town food places rasie their prices because they can get by with it. The way to make them lower their prices has been stated by publishing a boycott in the campus newspaper. Or handing out fliers outside on the public sidewalk advising all students of the unfair practice of higher food prices that the locals are charging them. I doubt that it would be very long with no customers or very few before the local food establishments decided that higher prices is not going to be very good for buisness. Heck I have seen more than one buisness fold because they thought they could charge you out the w***oo for thier services or food.

I sent an e-mail describing the incident to Mississippi's Office of Consumer Affairs, asking them to look into the fleecing of Mississippi college students by an unscrupulous business.

                        We'll see....

Shooter, I just e-mailed the content only portion of your post to my niece. Because I haven't talked to her in about a year I'm not sure if she still works for Subway Corp. in Milford, CT. or not. But she would know who to contact.
                          I'm awaiting her reply.
