  • does this make me official? Nightmare!

whooooeeee I had a bigun. Nightmare, that is. Normally I don't dream about work at all, maybe 3 or 4x a year, and then I can generally point to the hot call that got me going.

But last night was my first arrest, a 17yo on a juvenile warrant. Cheap, but FTO figured good experience. Also dealt with a crazy drunk guy in a shack... 9-1-1 hangup we had to folo up on.

This AM, had a super-complicated, long dream. Ended with the trooper that stopped to help me and my cruiser being wrecked by the bad guy (Oh, BTW, last night went Code 2 for a LONG ways, in rain, fog and DARK on unfamiliar roads, in a cruiser I drove for the first time YESTERDAY... lol!) and bad guy went nuts. In the end actually tried to shoot him, but gun wouldn't work. Somehow he had gotten something jammed in the magazine to prevent it from working.

I dunno which part was scarier, the "I'm going to draw my gun, I'm *going* to use it if he doesn't stop coming at me, I'm PULLING THE TRIGGER" or the fact that it didn't work when I did.

I know this is actually a fairly common dream for Rookies. The gun-not-working type dream.

So, does this make me official? lol!

Congrats!!! You have just been transferred to the rubber gun squad. Go see the Lt. to get your new firearm.

I don't know how official it is but welcome to the club. I haven't had the gun-won't-shoot or gun-shoots-point-blank-range-&-bad-guy-doesn't-go-down dreams for a long time but I used to have them quite frequently when I was in Patrol. Come to think of it, since I've been in Administration I haven't had the typewriter-won't-print or keypad-is-pressed-but-no-words-show-on-computer-monitor dreams either.

They keep coming at me with knives in my infrequent dream.....rather long knives. He (one) stabs and slashes, I feel pain but never see any blood. I block them, feel the pain on my arms and on one leg. I shoot him (felt SO good) again and again, and he goes down a mess. Still standing, I'm still standing, and leaning against my car. Then, I call for assistance.......am I an aggie or what?! Calling for help AFTER? Why didn't I have backup already? I can't tell my wife this one, she'd just freak. [Eek!]

        Keep on dreamin'

Just what is wrong with the "Rubber Gun Squad?" [Wink]

          Those dreams are rather common.
I hate the one where my firearms either don't work or fail to even phase the bad guy.

You can positively infleuence your dreams though, it has been several years since I have had a bad firearms dream, I decided that I wouldn't tolerate the weapons and stopping failures in my mind and the next time it didn't happen.
          YMMV

I call them "clickers" and they don't just happen to cops.

I've found that good therapy is a quick function check, a thorough cleaning, following by quick session at the range, followed by another thorough cleaning. I've been known to do this at 2am... [Wink]

It happens to everyone now and again. Just carrying gave me that nightmare for six months; the one time I actually thought I *might* have to draw led to another six months.

I imagine LEO's get used to that pretty quick, though.

Welcome to the club! And no you never get used to it, you just stop reacting to it.

I have a repeater about a mulitiple homicide I was at-domestic...child victims. A couple of images I'll never get out of my head and dreamland insures frequent revisiting of the scene. I'll bet that most folks here have the same thing happening.

As long as the dreams are about you...count your blessings and keep your gun clean.
                press hard please,...four copies

Frank, sometimes a cigar IS just a cigar...

and I think that for cops, gun dreams are somewhat less than Freudian..

um, especially since I'm a girl...

ROFL, maybe it was Freudian for Frank.

ok, Frank, I'm going to argue on this one...

I also happen to very, very rarely have a dream that involves horses. Either loose horses or sick horses... most often a horse falling on me. Now, horses are also a *universally* masculine symbol, expressing strength and virility.

BUT, I happen to own and run a small breeding farm. When I dream of sick horses, it's stress, worrying about one or the other of my horses, and some small thing my subconscious possibly caught that my conscious mind didn't. When I dream about horses running free, loose... Usually the next thing I do is wake up to that all too familiar clippity clop of hooves on the ROAD... and I have had several bad accidents when horses fell over on top of me, so that dream is far more PTSD than Fruedian.

Now, I'm *not* saying the gun not working isn't referring to impotence or fear of incompetence etc., as that's *exactly* what this particular stress dream was all about... BUT, there is almost NO cop alive that hasn't had the gun dream, and it is far more about the GUN and our fear/respect/love relationship with that weapon that can save our lives or not...

and just because I was almost an English major, Impotent has OTHER definitions than just the first one... [Wink]

and... I'm a GIRL. The firehose dream... don't think I'll *ever* have that one...

                          Frank,

                          Can you help me?

I have been having this dream where I go back in time, kinda like Van Damme in Time Cop, find Freud, pull out my 12ga, and hit him center mass.
He sprawls out on the cobblestoned alley dead.

Then I am transported in time to 1977, where I receive accolades at the halftime of the Superbowl and the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders carry me off the field to there waiting tour bus.

                          Or something like that.
Do your best, do what is right
