"Trying to be black"

Why do people say this and what does it mean? If you're a white kid growing up in....Newark or Detroit and all your friends are black isn't it natural to garvitate to the dominant culture? Isn't it the case that that culture is just as much your own? Does having specific manerisms really imply that you want to be white or balck or is it that it's just what you know?

White people are pretty lame, basically. The ones who realize this will seek out cultural experiences other than their "own" to try to be cool vicariously. Some young crackers just like to rebel and **** off their parents by taking on affectations like wearing Hammer Pants or those undewear-like things on their heads. I was born and raised in THE SOUTH. I had BLACK(NOT colored...NOT African American...) BLACK baby-sitters, nanas, etc. Personally, I couldn't have CARED LESS what color they were, as they TOOK CARE OF ME, fed me(talk about some GREAT food!), and whacked my butt when I needed it. One of these fine ladies(named Eva), is still alive. I see her every Christmas.

Did I 'adopt' their ways? Who knows...but I cook a mean mess o' purple hulled peas and pork liver!
