  • Opinion? SO vs. PD

Third night of my last tour, was heading to a diner to meet some colleagues for my meal. Saw a Deputy on the side of the highway on a vehicle stop. I pull behind the deputies car (I drive an unmarked Taurus, but I had the strobes lit, the dashlight on as well - and gave a blip of the siren as I was pulling up) get out and approach him as he was leaning against his vehicle writing the summons. I said vebatim: "Deputy, hello, I was on my way to clear a meal, and saw you here. Everything cool, or do you want me to stick around?"

(I work plain clothes, but had my shield hanging around my neck on a chain)

"No, I got it. I don't need your help."

So I say "Ok, just checking. We're on the same side, figured I'd che-"

"Hey! I don't need a lecture from you. I said I got it"

As you can see the guy was a complete idiot. I simply gave him a look, got back into my vehicle and left. Personally, I appreciate it when another officer stops to see if I'm ok. On or off duty, doesn't matter to me. But if you're off duty, you better have some ID out when you're approaching me...

So let me ask you...have you heard about things like this happening with your officers? Personally, I ahve heard of this happening very often, and it is almost ALWAYS with a deputy from the sheriffs dept. I mentioned it to my buddies once i got to the diner, and they told me similar things have happened to them.

So what have you got in your area? Is it the SO vs PD mentality or do you work together???

No major problems here - we have the usual inter-agency good-natured rivalry, but otherwise the Detachment members and my partners and I play very nicely with the City Police here.

Either that Deputy was just having a bad shift, or a bad day, which we all have, or he was an idiot. So, looks like a 66.7% chance that he will be an ok guy the next time.

I think it has to do with the sizes of the respective agencies... you know, pull down your pants we'll get out a ruler and we'll settle it... I MEAN.....

No, seriously... I dispatch at a Regional Comm Center. We have 7 Munis & the SO. The County Seat City does not go through us. They are the largest dept, and they are about the only ones the SO doesn't work *really* well with. But then, they're an entity unto themselves anyway. They don't play well with others.

We also do zone sharing, State Police & SO, County broken up into six zones, we rotate evens & odds every other week. SP is the SO's backup and Vice/versa. Out of our Munis, 3 of them have only one officer on at a time. So usually SP or SO are the closest backup while we call out one of their own from bed, or camp, or the beach... you get my meaning. They're awfully happy to see the brown uniforms arrive.

Things used to be completely us vs. them, but current Sheriff, zone sharing, and the Regional Comm have all worked to make it much more fun in the sandbox. Some of the munis still miss their own dispatch, but when it works, it works very well as far as getting out info, bolos, getting backup there YESTERDAY etc.

JMHO... from a smallish city & county area. FWIW I work part time (in addition to the FT Dispatch) for both the SO AND also for the largest Muni besides the county seat. They get along quite well.

While I occasionally will bust Samuel's chops about LASD , that agency has an excellent working relationship with MOST of the agencies in LA County. Largely because their academy is used by most of the agencies in LA County.

I've never had a problem with any of LASD's deputies, whether I'm booking a prisoner at the Inmate Reception Center, or coming across a deputy from a nearby Sheriff's substation.

I've seen the occasional rivalries between agencies but typically they are no big deal. A few of our younger cops are arrogant enough that they are not always polite with other agencies. Usually, a little time and experience serves to cure them of that.

Never really have a problem like that around here so far. I have backed up defferent depts., state police, sherriffs office, even in Ms and Fl and all I ever got was a thank you brother. Think you ran across an as*hole that might be happy to see you one day when his *** gets in a crack.

Of course, they are the number one agency in Los Angeles County.

Well I get along great with our local SO's.
Our agency has a good relationship with them.
I agree, we are all on the same side and I appreciate it anytime anyone checks on me.

we have rivalries with other PDs. most every officer in tarrant county has worked for the SO at one time or another.

the biggest problem i have is generally with rookie officers who start out their career working for a higher paid department. regardless of your experience, they still feel superior because their paycheck is a few more dollars higher than yours. their head swells up the size of a watermelon and their sh!+ begins to smell like roses; at least that's what they think. then some criminal comes along and makes them wish they'd chosen another line of work.

i've met some troopers like this, but generally, my take is the majority of good ones far outweigh the bad.

                    Wow, that sucks!

Sometimes there is issues around here between the depts., but typically its not that overt. We have 23 PD's the SO and the State Patrol working in our county. Typically, the WSP has the history of being "jack***es", but everyone else typically gets along.

I don't really understand why people get these attitudes. For the most part, the dept's that have an "aire of superiority" all have an some aspects which are equally as screwed up (if not more so) than the others.
Nobody ever wants to have to fight, but its a darn good idea for someone to know how.

We have a rivalry with one certain municipal PD. It stems from the Sheriff and his deputies to us explorers. None of us really like that agency for many reasons. But if any of one of our brothers or sisters needs help then you bet your @ss we'll be there.
