Young Woman Guilty On All Counts In 'Greensburg 6' Case
18-Year-Old Angela Marinucci Will Spend Life In Prison For Jennifer Daugherty's Murder

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- After about four hours of deliberations Thursday, a Westmoreland County jury found 18-year-old Angela Marinucci guilty of first-degree murder for her part in the group torture and killing of mentally disabled Jennifer Daugherty.

Marinucci, of Greensburg, faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole. The youngest of six suspects in the case, she is not eligible for the death penalty because she was 17 at the time of Daugherty's death. She was also charged with kidnapping and conspiracy.

In his closing argument Thursday, defense attorney Michael DeMatt told the jury that what happened to Daugherty was horrifying -- "a tragedy of epic proportions" -- and something nobody should ever have to go through. But he said Marinucci is not the killer, she did not want it to happen or encourage the others, and she was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

DeMatt asked the jury to consider Marinucci's specific state of mind at the time, and he told them there's no proof she had intent to kill. He reminded the jury that another co-defendant, Melvin Knight, is the one who's accused of actually stabbing Daugherty.

DeMatt also cast doubt on the credibility of current and former inmates at the county prison who testified as prosecution witnesses against Marinucci.

In District Attorney John Peck's closing argument, he said Marinucci is guilty of first-degree murder: "a willful, deliberate, premeditated murder." Channel 4 Action News' Jennifer Miele reported that the crimes code lumps conspirators or accomplices in with the actors themselves.

Peck claims Marinucci lit the flame that led to the murder because she was jealous about Daugherty's relationship with co-defendant Ricky Smyrnes, although Marinucci has testified that Smyrnes was not her boyfriend at the time.

Marinucci mistakenly believed she was pregnant with Smyrnes' child at the time of the murder, Peck said.

Prosecutors are hoping for a first- or second-degree murder conviction. Both carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

Daugherty's body was found in a trash can in the Greensburg Salem Middle School parking lot in February 2010.

County prosecutors said Marinucci instigated and participated in the grisly killing of the 30-year-old woman at an apartment shared by five other people who are scheduled to stand trial later this year.

But Marinucci's attorney said it's unlikely his client, a high school senior at the time, could have influenced the others the way prosecutors claim.

This is what a family member says happened to Jennifer:

angela lured jen to the appartment. angela, amber, melvin and ricky beat, tourtured, made her drink bleach, detergent, urine fecies, pills, cut off jens hair, and in the end, murdered jen. melvin raped jen. peggy and robert sat by and did nothing to help jen. melvin stabbed jen at least 7 times and cut her throat and ricky cut jens wrists. there were several times throughout the 2 days that ANY of the 6 involved could have helped jen or called 911. all 6 voted to kill jen. it is simply sad that we no longer have jen in our lives all because of some monsters. jen kept asking the 6 what she did wrong, to please let her go and to call or send her mom a message.

One down - 5 to go...the remaining 5 are death penalty cases. This case was a LWOP because she was a minor at the time of the crime.
