NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- A 5-year-old was injured after police said the child ingested PCP on Monday.

New Haven police said at 7:30 p.m. Monday, they responded to Yale-New Haven Hospital on reports of an injured child. When officers arrived, they were advised by hospital staff that the child was brought to the emergency room after suffering from internal irregularities due to the ingestion of phencyclidine (PCP).

Detectives from the Special Investigations Unit investigated the incident further.

Police were able to conclude that the child's mother, identified as Hope Brodie, 26, of Quinnipiac Avenue in New Haven, had been cooking PCP for personal use at her home. Police said that another relative of the child prepared food in a pot that had been used to make PCP, not knowing the pot had been used for that purpose.

The remnants of PCP were still in the pot and then contaminated the child's food, causing the medical issue, according to police.

Brodie was arrested by New Haven police and charged with risk of injury.

Officials said the Department of Children and Families was also contacted to investigate the incident.

Brodie was scheduled to appear in court on May 18.
