  • 40 apply to be Chicago’s top cop

More than 40 people have applied to become Chicago’s next top cop, officials said Tuesday.

The Chicago Police Board will interview the candidates for Chicago police superintendent and present three finalists to Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel, who takes office May 16.

Many of the candidates are members of the Chicago Police Department.

“Of the external candidates, many are current or former leaders of large organizations,” said Demetrius Carney, president of the Chicago Police Board.

The deadline for filing applications was Monday. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey, a former Chicago deputy superintendent, was considered a front-runner. But last week he announced he was not leaving Philadelphia. Sources said Emanuel balked at Ramsey’s request of about $400,000 a year in compensation for the Chicago job.

I hope they at least hire someone that's already been on the department and know how things work, much unlike how they hired Weis. It's not realistic to think every officer is going to be happy with the new Supt. but I think there will be more support for someone who has been with and is familiar with CPD.
