A Nevada police officer shot and killed a man after responding to a domestic assault call early Sunday.
Kevin Alton Johnson, 39, died by an officer’s gunfire in his home at 637 Seventh St. in Nevada, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation officials said.
Officer David Johnson, no relation to the deceased, responded to a 911 call at the house at about 2:55 a.m.
The officer met Kevin Johnson. After that, though, specific details about what led to a man’s death were scarce Sunday evening.
“During the interaction, Officer Johnson fired his weapon, striking and killing Kevin Johnson,†a DCI news release said.
What caused the two-year veteran Nevada officer to fire his weapon was not made public Sunday evening.
“The investigators are still trying to assemble the picture of what happened,†said Jessica Lown, an Iowa Department of Public Safety spokeswoman. “We want to have the complete picture together before we release more details.â€
Kevin Johnson owned the Seventh Street home with his wife, Jennifer Johnson, according to Story County Court records. A relative of Jennifer Johnson said there were no other injuries in the incident, but declined to comment further.
Kevin and Jennifer Johnson have two teenaged sons, ages 17 and 15, one of whom was at home when his father was shot and killed, said Kevin Johnson’s mother, Beverly Johnson.
Kevin Johnson spent the last day of his life preparing his big, yellow GMC truck, with “Pimp Daddy,†painted on the windshield in tall pink block letters, for the summer competitive truck pull season, his mother said.
Kevin Johnson was born and raised in Nevada. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1990. He worked at a well drilling company and worked in construction at the time of his death, Beverly Johnson said.
“He loved his children and was a very good father,†she said. “He loved truck pulling. He spent all the time he could with his boys. He’d do anything for them he could.â€
Beverly Johnson declined to discuss the events that led to her son’s death citing the ongoing DCI investigation.
Iowa court records show Kevin Johnson had a handful of public intoxication charges and speeding tickets in his 20s. Aside from a speeding ticket in 2006, Johnson had no brushes with the law in recent years — including no felony charges or previous domestic abuse or assault charges.
“He was a typical boy growing up,†Beverly Johnson said. “He made a few mistakes. We’re not all perfect.â€
Nevada police officials placed officer David Johnson on paid administrative leave pending the DCI investigation. The leave is typical in cases in which an officer fires his weapon in the line of duty.
