CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- A Chattanooga police officer was shot and killed Saturday morning while responding to an armed robbery.

Sergeant James Timothy Chapin, 51, was killed in the line of duty Saturday. Sergeant Chapin was a 27-year veteran of the Chattanooga Police force and a father of two.

Officer Lorin Johnston, 45, was also shot and wounded during the shootout at the U.S. Money Store at 5952 Brainerd Road.

Officers were called to check on a hold-up alarm automatically triggered by one of the store's employees.

As the officers arrived at the scene, a male suspect began firing at police as he fled.

In the ensuing running gun battle Sgt. Chapin was shot and killed.

Chattanooga Police say a suspect was shot at least once and has been taken to a local hospital to be treated.

Police have not released the name of the suspect, but say the suspect is not from Chattanooga.

Police have shut down Brainerd Road between East Brainerd Road and the Rib & Loin restaurant. A command post is set up in the Big Lots parking lot.

The investigation is expected to last into the evening.

Chattanooga Police say six officers have been placed on paid leave pending an investigation, a standard procedure in any officer involved shooting.

Sergeant Chapin is the 20th Chattanooga Police officer killed in the line of duty since the city began keeping records following the Civil War.

He is the first Chattanooga officer killed in action since Officer Julie Jacks was shot and killed in May of 2002.

Something needs to be done to put a stop to this, like a public hanging with in 24 hours of conviction and the trial need to be done soon after the killing.

RIP Sarge! sorry you went out like this and not with the retirement you deserve....

Truly sad...a guy who dedicated more than half his life to the field goes out like this! Anyone who kills a cop should be put to death....not only is it murder but its basically an attack on authority and the "law" in our beautiful country. No rehabilitation for that! Today, more and more are opting to shoot it out with LEOs....unfortunately a growing trend in todays society brought on by the "ganster-a zation" of society and the lack of morals, pussified DAs offices and a media that glorifies violence

          Wow....RIP Officer Chapin.
I was hoping we'd make it 5 days in a row without an officer being killed this year...

RIP Sergeant, you subscribed to the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics and have fulfilled your duties in your community. Go forth and serve with St Michael. You have earned your place with him. Bless you for your actions and know that you are appreciated.
